XR600 lighting system - separate circuit ?
« on: August 22, 2017, 02:43:26 PM »
Messing around with a big ol thumper.  95 XR600R    Somehow, it already has a street legal title.  But the Baja Designs kit that was once on there, is now gone.

With all the L.E.D. technology out there these days, couldn't I just run an LED headlight, tail light, and a horn with a small lithium battery on it's own separate circuit ?
Seems like it would be easy to make it's own little harness with a switch for the entire system, and a separate switch for the headlight/tailight ?   With the little LED lights they have these days, seems like it would work.   If only for the times you ride a little at night ?    I could leave a connection for a charger.

I have a system I use on my mountain bike that was cheap and is brighter than a stock CB750 headlight.  Battery is about the size of 4 AA batteries.  It easily lasts over 3 hours on a charge.

Hmmm....
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Seems quite reasonable. As long as the headlight was mostly DOT legal and didn't draw too much, I would think you'd be fine. The only issue I see is potentially damaging the battery from constantly drawing it down (some batteries don't like that much...).

I don't know about the '95 XR 600, but the '82 XR 500 had a 6 volt AC, unregulated lighting coil that fed the tiny headlight and tail light, independent of the engine's ignition system. (The FT also has a separate charging system, independent of the ignition system.)
Don't fix it if it ain't broke!

This is my first first dirt bike since the 80's...   Not much for wiring.  The XR600 stator is minimal and they are not street legal unless you do some things to it.
Still reading about them - just figured this might be a very easy solution.  Now I'm leaning toward buying a replacement stator and harness.
