1974 CB750 Boss Maroon Metallic fuel tank ordeal
« on: July 31, 2017, 07:17:06 am »
We finally were able to get our hands on this great looking 1974 CB750 after 10 years of haggling over a price, the original let it go to a new owner.  The main issue for me was that the tank was kreem lined years ago.  Although it was a great job, the new fuel additives have broken down the liner and it had to be removed.  We did our best to try to save the outside paint since it was still in fairly nice shape.
As you can see, it didn't work.  The acetone leaked out of the fuel lid when I pressed the rubber plug in just a bit too far, causing the masking tape to lift and allowing just a small amount to get under the protective wrap.  The pictures speak for themselves.  Now the tank has been completely repainted with VMR Boss Maroon Metallic.  I think it looks great!  I have always loved the color.

Sorry you lost your original paint. I have had to remove Kreeme before also with good original paint.. Secret is having a good fitting plumbers plug,I have to wrap a little tape around mine for a good fit. Use it for de-rusting tanks also. Watch for a pressure release when removing. I do not like the tape and seal the outside deal as you can't tell if you have a problem as you found out. I put on a super heavy coat of unbuffed Turtle Paste Wax for a little protection and then try and be super careful with rags etc. handy. I used a couple of pop bottles of a runny water soluble paint stripper called 1776 to do mine. Was very glad and relieved when it was done !
All hail the Boss Maroon, guess I'm in the club also  ;)

Yes I thought it was safe with the double wrap of heavy cellophane, the newspaper then another layer of cellophane...I messed up by using weak tape around gas cap and a rubber plug that may have shrunk and went into the filler hole too deep...then the perfect storm...I didn't know I broke the barrier and the acetone was under the wrap for 10 hours...My bad..I havent screwed up this bad in a long time.  The tips you mention above are all very good ideas!

You did a really awesome job on the paint! Quick question: Where did you get the plug for the top of the gas tank? I'm looking into giving the innards of my tank an acetone bath this weekend.

I bought mine at a regular hardware store but had to wrap some electrical tape around it for a good fit. They are called expandable plumbers plugs.
