These storms are getting worse. There need to be some preventive measures taken, but they won't.

That won't happen any time soon since greed and stupidity trumps common sense every time. Just like in the comments section on a local story where people got flooded out and wanted to complain because their property and home were in a bathtub drainage-wise behind a flood levee and why didn't the gubment do more to make sure their little parcel never floods again. People told them maybe they should move away from a known area that frequently floods and their response was how could they move away from a house and land their family owned for 100 years?  ::)

These storms are getting worse. There need to be some preventive measures taken, but they won't.

What preventative measures would you suggest? Evacuate a city the size of Houston to say Austin and Dallas? If the storm track varied by a couple hundred miles either way (which is often the case) then Austin and/or Dallas could be facing the same problems. Houston is 40 miles from the coast. Florida is less than 150 miles wide for most of its length. Here in Florida it is difficult to get any further than 70 miles from the coast. Sooooo.... coastal evacuation here in Florida is to move inland which will typically get you no more than 70 miles (often less) from either coast. Figure at least 30% (or more) retards that refuse to evacuate nor heed the warnings seriously (Darwinism at its finest) and you will almost always end up with more people requiring assistance than was necessary. My own home is less than 50 miles from the coast, and being an inland structure of concrete block meets the criteria for an evacuation shelter from coastal areas and I would stay put. A really bad storm would motivate me to board up the windows, but I'm not going anywhere. People were ordered to evacuate the Keys to Homestead, FL for hurricane Andrew. Hurricane Andrew then proceeded to make landfall in Homestead, leaving the Keys much less impacted than Homestead.

Heck, I'll wager many of the coastal residents were ordered to seek shelter IN Houston. When it's all said and done I expect Houston will fare better than Rockport.

We just left the house.  Water was rising fast.  We had about two inches vertical before it was in the house.  It won't stop raining.  We're in the lobby of a hotel, high and dry, trying to figure out where we can go.  It's hard to get around.  Water everywhere.

That's what I understand from the news reports. Even if many wanted to head for higher ground right now many of them have no clear path that isn't flooded and impassable. Hope you are able to stay safe and that the high water spares your home.

Just meeting the necessities of food/water/shelter looks like a monumental task right now.

Tried to get to kmb69's house.  The road was flooded so we went back to the hotel.  Miraculously they got us in a room.  2nd floor, baby!  High and dry.  Probably be here for a couple of days.  Pretty sure the house and shop are flooded.  I got all the chopper parts off the floor.  I didn't get either of the other two bikes off the ground.  Hope they make it.

I hope you don't need to worry with it, but...
If the bikes go underwater you will need to tear them completely down.  Insurance usually will total them.
The water and dirt gets everywhere.  It tends to corrode things pretty quick if I recall correctly.  Getting the water and dirt out without damaging bearings and precision fit surfaces is the tough part.  Better to just toss bearings and install new.

Rb550four has dealt with water in motors of bikes and motors he has picked up.
He might be a good person to ask for advice as he has rebuilt a few that had water and a mess in the crankcase.

Prayers for you all in TX and LA with all the water from the storms.

I thought we had it bad 6 years ago...6- 10feet of fast moving water.
It was over the next day, we had mountains to escape to, and there wasn't 6.5 million people in need of rescue, food, and shelter. I watch the news in awe.
I feel so bad for you Texas  (and Louisianna) folks, I remember when survival mode kicked in and I thought of nothing else...that was the best part of the experience.
Depression sets in when we were safe going through all our stuff that was destroyed. I found  that it was just better to throw everything out in the street and front loader the neighborhood into metal piles, wood piles, and garbage piles into a central area so that the scrapers could pick up the metals, the garbage could be loaded into trucks and taken away,  wood dealt with later... kept the area safe and clean so the rebuild effort could begin and work relatively smoothly thereafter.
This rebuild effort is going to be a long miserable process. Caution must be taken with rubber gloves and masks...you must wear them, every nasty thing in the world is in that water, bad things, wear the protection , I've lost allot of friends  to cancer after ingesting all that stuff. Your town is going to smell like dirty socks for a long time , that's when everything is still soaked, it gets worse for you when it drys out enough for the dust to blow, all the bad stuff is still in the air don't give up on a mask yet, then ,the mildew... careful around that too. Masks rubber boots and rubber gloves, even if it gets hot...they can save your life.
Fema will waist you time in line promising you help. They are mainly interested in estimating a dollar amount of damage for the area, the lines will get smaller in a few days and they will still be there. If the Feds find monies for grants , or property byouts you will have had to fill out the Fema paper work within the 30 days from the flood before the fema group leaves the area. The buyout is BS, 30K for your house, that's it..the state may grant the dollars to tear it down otherwise  the township is responsible for the cost. The property then goes to the town as long as nothing is ever built on it again... your town will be financially responsible to insure and mow the new parcel  which used to be your home that Fema gave only 30K for. Hold out and sell it for over 30 to a interested neighbor ,if you can.
If you had flood insurance watch those insurance companies...don't cash a check if you don't have it in writing that more is available as you need. You don't want to find out it has been SETTLED by you accepting and cashing that first check.
Find out about dollar amount/percentage of damage to the structure. You may be underinsured and think that you can get alittle more by squeezing out all the damage. but if you are lucky enough to have moderate repair , say less than 51% of the value of your home be careful. If you claim over 51%  you may have to make upgrades to the entire structure to meet the most recent building codes. This could cost more $ than you may have been covered for, and you end up with a mostly finished house with no CO that you aren't allowed to live in til there is a CO.
Be sure to was hands and sanitize, you are still in a sewer. Eat  meals with your neighborhood at a church or whatever is available it's good for morale and people won't feel desperate and alone.
I feel so bad for you guys, keep us updated  please  and be safe , things are slippery and sharp objects are just under the muck. get a Tetanus shot .
As for the bikes...Keep them , they will need a TOTAL BREAK DOWN and new parts like David said.
When mine drowned ,rebuilding them saved my sanity when the craziness of rebuilding our "lives"
went on a hell of a lot longer  than I could stand.  It's therapy.

We went to the house today.  We got about 10.5" of water in the house.  Pretty much everything is damaged.  It all goes to the street.  Once the house is clear we'll be starting from scratch.  Lots of folks are offering to help already.

I've helped gut at least a dozen flooded houses in Louisiana and Texas.  I know what to do and what to expect.  Tomorrow I'll be on the phone with the insurance companies.  I've already applied for FEMA assistance online.

Thanks, Steve and Frank.  I've helped a lot families who have been in this situation.  Feels bizarre to be on other end.  We really don't have a lot of stuff.  My stuff is mainly in the shop and most of it is OK.  It'll be interesting to see what happens with my motorcycles.

I drove down Brookside this morning and I knew it was bad. Total bummer!
Must be nearly 2 feet difference in elevation between our houses - only 3 blocks apart.
Let me know if I can help in any way.

Is the flooding by Bud's because Clear Creek is out of it's banks?

Appears to be the case but I did not try to drive down to the creek to see.
My house must sit pretty high because there are houses flooded less than 2 blocks away, all around - North, South, East, and West.
