CB550F Exhaust Fix
« on: August 27, 2017, 01:12:50 PM »
I've got a '75 CB550F (see attached photo) with the original Kerker exhaust on it. As you can see from the photo, the upper half of the exhaust has some rust and corrosion on it. Exhaust is in great shape otherwise, but I want to fix the issue simply for aesthetics. Do you guys have any advice on the best way to remove this, and then possibly paint over it to match the clean black of the back portion of the exhaust? (She just survived Hurricane Harvey, so I want to celebrate by cleaning her up a bit). Thanks!

Congrats on surviving the storm, that was a monster. Houston was not so lucky.

I would sandblast the header and then have it ceramic coated, should look great [or paint, but that wont hold up nearly as well]

To be clear, Honda used their own exhaust on the original.
Kerker is an aftermarket replacement.

If we want to get technical, Honda used Sankei for the exhaust on the 550F.

It's a tech forum.

Did Sankei make exhausts for anyone besides Honda?

Could you buy them direct from builder?

Hey John....their website has a list of contacts.

Mind if I ask what you want to ask them?

When I'm not so damn broke, I'd love to ask them if they can/would still make 550F mufflers to order!

If the tooling is not long ago scrapped it would need a pretty good capital outlay to refurbish the tooling to be able to turn out excellent examples.

The last batch of one of the 750 Honda pipe runs had chrome issues with lots of returns.  Is that a function of flawed chroming process or possibly an issue with materials or prep before chrome?

OP, did you buy this from a guy named Riley? Might have gone by Tom? If so this is my old roommate's bike, I remember quite a bit about it and helped him paint it that blue color :) I can also tell by the shaved down seat, and the fact that it has that original Kerker. Feel free to let me know if you have any questions. Pretty sure I still have pictures of that bike in my living room, haha. So glad it survived harvey, and glad we didn't get hit too hard in Austin.
