that's half of another tank sitting on my lift. i first considered using it as the dummy section to stretch the stock tank (and haven't totally ruled it out), but decided that glass would be easier to work, and will allow me to customize the shape much easier.

by the way "Great Stuff" is not all that great stuff to use here. that particular brand of expanding foam dries soft and spongy, and is hard to sand. can't remember the brand name that has worked best for me, but it is a polyurethane expanding foam, and sands very easily. just came from the shop, and i'm covered in foam dust...

I use that green stuff people use to put flower arrangements together.

Dirt cheap and really easy to sand.

If I can't walk across my shop in white socks its time to clean it

i started off in that shop with 6 or so hondas crammed between a boat, a VW squareback "arts car," and a pile of my landlord's other crap in about 100 sq. feet. now, 2 years later, i share the entire 1400 sq. ft. with 7 other friends---most of whom are members on here (mr. blasty, southbound, billdramp, whodareswins, and toddthreat)---and have shared welding equipment, blasting cabinet, grinder/buffer, parts washer, etc. i'm pretty lucky. oh yeah, and the rent is $200.

kghost--the main thing i like about the expandable foam, is that the base can be formed right around the frame or whatever else you are working around. also, if you shave too much, you just add more and wait for it to set up. i tried 2" rigid foam glued together at first, but it was too much of a pain getting the underside cut out to fit the frame.

Had that exact same issue.

The green flower foam you can even carve with your finger. I just make a block by gluing a bunch of 2 inch pieces together then push it on the frame.

Where ever it makes an indentation I carve it away with a spoon.

Its like butter that stuff.

Which kind of fiberglass matting are you going to use? Just wondering if one works better than the other. And how many layers are you going to put on?

I can picture it done and it looks great in my head.

i'm going to lay fabric on top, then remove the foam and lay several layers of chop mat beneath it for strength. that way, i won't have to visualize the whole thing 1/8 thinner than it will actually be.

for the seat, i'll finish the exterior exactly how i want it to be with body filler or polyester glazing putty, then use this as a plug to make a mold. this will allow me not only to make a couple more, but to have a nice thick, smooth layer of resin as the top layer of the finish product.

i'd never let a yamaha anywhere near my stand! the only non-honda guy in the shop (with two old trombone-company yamahas) is sequestered clear in the back corner!

the bike in the picture is actually a 1976 cb750F, with stock rear brake and wheel.

I wish I did mine that way, getting a good finish with glass seems a pain in the butt. I have just applied "fairing compound" on mine, and will be covered in crap when it gets sanded, hopefully that will give the desired look.

i've found the absolute easiest route a combination of sandable spray foam and a DA sander. i was using an electric orbital sander at first, and when i switched to the DA set as a grinder, it became incredibly easy to sand (using a 40 grit).

note: none of the spray foams i have tried seems to be dissolvable by anything i can find. this would be a clear advantage to stacking rigid or using the flower stuff (no idea if it dissolves either though). also, i highly recommend going with the glass cloth instead of chop matt. it's really easy to work around corners and curves, and is really thin. i layed up three solid layers over the whole thing, and three more towards the front where i won't be able to access the back side if it's not strong enough, but the whole thing is rock solid--no chop matt backing seems necessary.

How then do you get the foam out of the tank? I am doing the same process here and thought acetone would dissolve the stuff but was dissapointed with my "test" blob...
