72 honda 750 starter noise
« on: August 28, 2017, 10:24:32 PM »
Help! 72 Honda cb750 starter noise. It spins the engine for a few seconds then engine stops spinning. Starter is still running, but rattling noise is coming from inside cover. If I let off the switch and engage again, same thing happens. Will start fine with kick start. Does this have a starter bendix like a car? It sounds like a chain slipping.

It sounds like it is the starter clutch. There are repair kits out there, and its a fairly simple fix.

I think you are right. Do you know where I can source the parts? I looked at Dime City and David Silver but neither one has the parts.

Is this clutch inside the starter? I don't have a service manual for this. It's my grandson's bike and I'm just trying to help him get it running again. Thanks for the help.

Those parts goes on back of the rotor, starter clutch is located there. I'm asking 20$ shipped to your door.

You sure these are good parts? New kit is $35. I like saving a few bucks, but not if you are not positive that the used stuff is good.

Yes I'm sure they will work if installed properly. It's a little tricky to install them if you'll be doing this first time but I'm sure you'll be fine. Let me make some pictures.

That's the kit

And that's the back of the rotor where you install them

T-bird, the hub of the starter gear where the rollers in the "kit" ride may also be worn; notice the wear in this picture:

Scottly, did you ever turn down that surface as previously planned?

In the pic from Danyo you will need to drill out the 2 staked spots on each bolt/screw. Then use an impact driver to remove the bolts. If you damage the screw heads trying to remove them 'conventionally' you will make life difficult. This can be an easy job with the right tools. Rotor remover and impact driver are IMO a must and just a small investment. Sell them afterwards to another forum member. Now with that said if you have access to an air impact wrench for the rotor removal tool it turns into a VERY simple and relatively quick job. If you are lucky and careful you may be able to reuse the cover gasket too but be prepared to buy another. May as well go ahead and order one now as it may save you another week waiting for one.

Yes, I did. IIRC, I had to take .005-6" off the diameter to get a full clean-up, and that gear didn't slip when I removed it. After a certain point, custom over-size rollers would be needed. Hmm, maybe when things slow down at work..... ;)
Oops, forgot to add the after pic.

Thanks to everybody who responded. I'm getting the used parts from DANYO. I'll let you know how it comes out. This site is a wonderful resource, especially for someone not familiar with bikes.

Wait !.. are you attempting to start the bike off the actual bike battery or a jumpted battery or car battery/ running ??
P.S. 750 starters never go wrong ( never seen it with 7 years on this forum ).

Starting from fully charged bike battery, even tried it with a charger hooked up to the battery for some extra amperage. The starter motor still spins when the engine stops turning and there is a rattling sound from inside the covers. Sounds like what a slipping chain might sound like. When I release the starter switch and reengage, it does the same thing. Seems to stay engaged longer when everything is cold. The bike had been siting for some time, so we had a hard time getting it to fire. My grandson said it had been doing the starter thing for a long time before the bike sat.
