re. the rpm question: 7k is where the fun only starts. these guys were built to be used up to redline, really used.
monday i had a pretty free highway and spent more than an hour constantly at 9k. if the engine is healthy that's no problem.

looks like a nice dog guarding your bike, by the way :)

I like to use a dowel of slightly smaller diameter as the fuse and then wrap it with emery cloth to polish the clip contact area.  Just spin it in place where the fuse would go.
I've also used semichrome polish.  And some have reported using a .22 caliber bore brush.
The oxidation can be dull colored or clear and both types need to be removed.  Cleaning interval is about 10 years.
