I feel like there should be some sort of help group that I need to join. You know the ones where you stand up and go hi my name is daggles888 and I have an addiction. I then go into my life story, everyone claps and I sit down. Why after a 2 year build would you want to jump straight back in and do another! There's something about these sohc 550's that I just can't get enough of. They are my "P addiction" I have only just finished fitting a Cognito disc rear to my last " next generation of petrol head" build and I find a new donor to fill my shed. Not sure what we are going to end up with this time round but really happy with the donor. She runs, no oil leaks and has received some love by PO. Forks have been polished along with engine covers. A really solid starting point.

Liking your thinking cal. Just going to get the motor away for vapour and coating. Will give me a few weeks to start getting all the bits together. I'm going with blacking the cases out this time and keeping the covers bright. Opposite to what I've done in the past but I'm liking the look. Motor popped out of the frame tonight no problems. Just gotta get no1 son to give me a lift up onto the bench. Getting too old to lug these lumps all alone.

So the strip down begins and the surprises start. Po obviously owned a silicone factory. Absolutely every bolt and tappet cover coated and stuck back on :(. Cam cover has been welded back together. I'm thinking a replacement will be needed. Thoughts anyone??

Was it leaking by the welds ?
They were probably trying to pull it down with the screws, with something binding the cover.

I'm liking some of the hipo mods. Lightened clutch. Luckily it was rubbing on the clutch actuator so it only wore down on the alloy. Cover is all good. Small win for the day  :)

No leaks were evident. Had so much silicone covering it nothing was ever going to weep. I'm thinking there's a reason so much silicone was used everywhere. Had to cover up all the bits they broke off.

Cam and journals all look really good. The only real problem areas are the normal ones of case grind from main drive, cam chain stretch but still worried about the cam cover repairs. They look really manky. Will clean them all up and work out what we can do. Main crank is nice and tight. Best part is all the bolts came out without having to drill any out. Galley plugs even loosened without any problems.

So tonight's wee surprise consists of a bit of chain damage. I'm picking the chain has let go whilst in motion and decided to give the cover and case a good hard whack!! Sigh!!!! Well I've always wanted to learn how to weld alloy :'( or maybe I could just get a really big tube of silicone...hopefully that's the last of the surprises. All broken down and ready for vapour.

Just had a call from Gordy who is the vapour blast guru based in South Island of New Zealand. He has sent some before and after shots. will be all finished by the weekend ready for pick up. All the goodies have been arriving over the last couple of weeks. Love this part of the build. I received DCC box today and loved the wee message that added. Now that's customer service 😀

Chain damage to case all repaired. all ready for ceramic coating. Going to do black with chrome highlights. Looking forward to getting this one back.

Have been looking round for a cb650 tank. I like the shape and especially the top. Only ugly bit is the gas cap. thinking of putting a later model aviation style in place. Eventually found one sitting in utah. trusty ebay comes through again.

Relocating the side stand. i like to run it along the frame rail to tidy it all up. next up new subframe to lift the back a couple of inches to get the stance just right.

Picked up the cam cover yesterday after repairs to fix PO's dodgy fix. apparently it was a bit of a pain to weld but im happy with the results. ready to ship off to powder coaters now.  :)

Life has been getting in the way of the build but time to get back on track. Have been collecting all the bits and pieces needed so as soon as the engine returns from being bored out we can get the mock up completed. Got some great pieces to go onto this one

Shot over to Phillip island invitational classic to have a bit of a look. Some stunning bikes overloaded the senses. Just a few snaps of some of the bikes racing and in the car park.
