Need small, OEM handlebar switches.
« on: December 26, 2006, 09:00:19 PM »
I want to ditch the stock switches on my bars & go with a more sleek set up. I want to keep the horn, signals, kill switch, starter button etc. Basically I want all the stock functionality intact. It would maybe be cool to throw something together with some electrical switches or buttons. Maybe relocate the hi-lo beam switch to on top of the headlight directly. Please share any solutions you guys have. I am going for a bobber look with a touch of modern (I have this cool digital speedo/ tach I am going to use). Thanks.

Something like this is cool I guess but it seems like it would protrude from the bars too much:

I bought a nifty little chrome switch from the scooter junkyard . com for my CB450 project.
It is a 3 position switch for the turn signals, and also has one other switch for whatever you want (horn/starter/kill switch/etc). It is pretty small, but is still big in my opinion. Haven't decided 4 sure if I am gonna use it or not.

You could always put the switches directly into the back of the headlight bucket, under the gas tank, into the triple-tree, etc...

I bought a Universal control out of Performance Plus dirt bike catalogue. It's one control but it has every function needed except the starter button.

On the 750 the left control incorporates the clutch perch and mirror mount and the right control holds the throttle and cables. I got a Motion Pro throttle and a clutch perch/lever for a XR400. The result is cleaner bars while keeping full function(except the start button).

EDIT: Dirt bike catalogue is "Parts Unlimited"  not  "Performance Plus"  (see link in later post)

This is the switch which I currently have for the CB450 project --->

They have more switches available here --->
http://www.themopedjunkyard.com/switches.html

It is small/chrome/looks vintage/etc but I amnot 100% sure I like it after seeing
it on the bars. Looking forward to seeing a pic of the switch Scondon has..

Those controls do look pretty cool, Proteal ;)  The one I have is definitely not as small since it has signals,horns,kill,3position headlight,etc... But the feature I like about it is that everything plugs into a 9 pin connector. If I ever want to remove signals and lights for a ride at the track I can remove the control by unplugging just one connection.

I tried taking a pic of the whole set-up(entire bars) but the flash kept hitting the chrome bars and making really poxy pics. I'll try again in daylight.

These two pics aren't very good for size perspective but at least they show the Universal switch and XR400 clutch perch.

Scondon, any chance you could post the link for where you got that?  I did a google search on who you said you bought it from and I couldn't find much.  I like the look of it, its very clean and the cable runs outside, would work great with my bike.  Thanks!

My buddy owns a shop so I just thumbed through his parts catalogues to find what I wanted. I mistakenly said it was "Performance Plus" when in fact it's  "Parts Unlimited" catalogue. Most bike shops that sell accessories have a Parts Unlimited catalogue and here is their online catalogues.

http://www.parts-unlimited.com/catalogs/

I ordered from the "Offroad" catalogue in the "electrical" section but don't find the switch listed online. Lots of other good stuff in the online catalogues though.

Here's a pic I snapped last night with everything mocked up on my CB450 project.
The switch doesnt look bad on the bars now that everything is together, as I dont think I am gonna be able to find anything smaller than what I got now..

Here's a crappy pic of how my little switch looks on my bars.

Not bad - but I am still not 100% if I am gonna keep/use it...

Is that a 1/4 turn throttle,Proteal? Not a lot of room on the clip-ons, I can see why the mini switch is so appealing :)

Look what I found by doing a search on their page:
http://offroad.parts-unlimited.com/20/216/2812922?q=2106-0010

Yes, that's it. Now why couldn't I find it ??? :P :)  I haven't wired it up yet so I can't tell ya how well it actually works, but I've mounted it to make sure I can reach all the switches with my big ol' thumb.

so does it have horn, starter button, hi lo beam, signals & kill switch?

Yes. It's got everything except a starter button. The headlight switch has on,OFF, and highbeam and there is a highbeam indicator light on the control. Specs and pic are in the link that mkramer1121 provided.

They're certainly easier to plug into the harness ;) :)

The clip-on's def. don't leave allot of room for things, but thats kinda the look (clean/tight/narrow) that I am going for on this bike so it all works out. The universal throttle is offa Pocket/pit bike so I am not sure if it is 1/4 turn or not. All I know is that is is narrow, black, made outta metal, and cost me $10  ;D I am still gonna be on the search for a different switch, but I think I am not gonna find anything smaller than what I currently have..

So I take it the switch I have is crap huh ?
Maybe if I go overboard on waterproofing it (terminals/wiring/etc) I will be OK.
I am gonna use it anyways and see what happens..

Well, there's always the lever sticking out of the engine ;) But being the lazy type I'm going to wire a button up and mount it to the headlight shell. Haven't looked for a button switch yet but don't expect much difficulty in finding something to suit the purpose.

Home Depot has a nice selection of small push style switches that work great for
"low-key" starter buttons..

Cool, There's a HD not far from my house :)

I've been flirting with the idea of using a small doorbell. Ding-Dong! "Hello Mr. Bike, can engine come out and play"
