Hurricane Harvey is gonna hit everyone in the pocketbook at lot more than just gas prices. Wait till your home of business insurance renewal comes up.

Gas in Vancouver is $5.60 CAD a US gallon

Just paid flood insurance for the year last week. I shall be in a new shop, on a mountain before that comes up again. It was considerably higher than it has been this time around.

Holy #$%*!  $5.60?!  What does diesel cost?!
That was the price that broke Murica's economy!

Also sparked a rather short lived fbi investigation into the oil companies.  Only heard about that just once on the news.
The oil companies were so proud of their record profits.  But the pricing practice collapsed an entire segment of transportation businesses and drove the price of commodities up by quite a large percentage.

Still to this day folks wanna blame the 2008 "financial crisis" on the housing market or the stock exchange and I'm here like....did no one notice that $5/gal gas and diesel affected EVERYONE?

As insurance works, we will all pay a premium even if we don't live in a flood zone.

I agree with you Bomber, and if the price goes up we will see the for sale signs on all the SUVs fast!  Now is the time to get a cheap gas saver.  I sell hundreds of nice ones listed for $1k to $2k in my area.  If gas goes up to $4 again these will quickly go up in price.  I would buy them as flips if there wasn't such an over supply.

I think lots of people went to bigger cars leaving these econ boxes all over the place.

Gas prices here were unchanged as of last Thursday morning: $2.28 at one station and $2.50 at another. This afternoon, I noticed both stations had raised their prices by 6 cents a gallon, and that may have been due more to the holiday than Harvey.

Even if the prices goes up a dollar a gallon it won't really hit me hard.

At 3.2 gallons per fill-up I'm only paying something like 10 bucks a pop (close enough).  Paying 13 bucks instead... big deal.

So far as I know, any price hits from the hurricane won't be felt for a while anyway.  The gas at the pumps has been paid for already.

Things must be very different where you live.
In Vancouver the price of fuel changes at the thought of an interruption in supply regardless if the station tanks are full or not. Bad news = higher profits.
Hell, prices change based on purchasing habits. Prices are always higher in the morning when commuters are going to work and drop in the evenings. Don't they refer to that as peak pricing or something like that. Watch the prices sore on long weekends too. It's criminal.

Was out of the country for 10 days and came back last night. Saw signs at stations for $2.55 here in the greater Cleveland area. Sort of expected this rise due to Harvey.

Fuel prices always change as of late Thursday in anticipation of the increased demand for the weekend, worse for a holiday weekend. And distribution changes or anticipated shortages/demand increase always forces a rise in pricing. Fuel is a commodity and is bought/sold and traded as such.

Other factors are regulations, taxes, and seasonal formulation changes.

A part of those "record profits" Bomber, was the oil companies inability to build more wells due to stiffer regulations, reduced drilling areas. If you are amortizing the cost of a drilling platform, and they're already 30 years old, then the revenue becomes a larger profit. And when fuel costs increase, the profits do as well. Make no mistake, the financial crisis was due to mortgage shenanigans, but many industries profited as a result.

As for the cost of diesel, THAT is a sham. It requires 50% less refinement than gasoline, and thus should be much lower per gallon. The new "low sulphur formulation" is an absolute ruse in terms of its cost. Gas companies earn more profit on a gallon of diesel than a gallon of gas due to the enormous amount of diesel consumed by transportation industries and equipment running diesel. If it takes half the effort and produces less mileage (think semi trailer with 100 gallon tanks getting about 6MPG) you immediately see the profit formula. It would take about 100,000 Toyota Corrolas 2 years to eat that much gas  >:(

In the Midwest our wells have mostly sweet crude that does not have a lot of diesel in it. Hence the higher diesel costs here.

Diesel was $2.64 in NJ the other day, and $2.58 on 8/12.
Diesel was $2.67 in ME the other day, and $2.52 on 8/18.

Not sure what I've been paying for gas for the boat or bike over the past few weeks, haven't paid attention.
