'75 Planet Blue Metallic project
« on: September 04, 2017, 07:56:35 pm »
I got lucky this time and am working with fresh new pieces . . certainly not what I am used to working with  :) The paint should be here very soon. So far the three pieces are primed and awaiting color. These belong to theDQG.

The tank is a repro I picked up off ebay- I got tired of striking out on nasty surprises that came with used tanks off ebay. I learned the hard way that you never strip a tank without giving it the leak test first. Once you lay a finger on that tank, you will not be able to get a refund.

Sides are from Franken.

Looking forward to the results. Very excited! I've always admired the work that Pete does.

Pete,
Very very smooth, should look great as everything in paint requires a great base and it appears that is present in spades.
Are you mixing the Planet Blue yourself or is it coming from VMR or other classic bike paint suppliers?

If you are mixing yourself would you share the formula...considering that color for a bike that needs a color change and I am giving it a basic paint job as an adult returning to school for the next career, a student budget is also present in spades... I cannot afford to farm it out at this time...

BTW, do you strip the paint off the fuel neck at top where it seals and  then clear the bare steel with a urethane that is fuel resistant?
Seen a few paint jobs fail usual home jobs but have seen a few on the forum out of shops these days because the gas was able to get under the paint causing it to wrinkle around the filler neck.

If you look closely the photo, you will see the tank has a plug in the fuel neck. The plug covers the top of the neck, so it won't get painted. As for the covers, these covers are different than the red ons I painted a few months back. Both are new aftermarket, but these are much more flexible. The others were plastic as well, but they appeared to be a form of fiberglass.Fiberglass is polyester plastic. But these are definitely not fiberglass. The added flexibility is good to mounting and un-mounting them. However The covers can flex a lot more than the paint will be able to do. So with these flexible covers, be careful not the flex them too much, once painted.

looking at that can of paint it occurred to me, I don't think I have ever seen an un-faded original Planet Blue metallic CB750. I must have bought a dozen or more PBM sidecovers for my PBM 75 750K and not a single one of them have that deep, dark,  or lustrous of a blue color.

It looks a little more green in that light but also very deep.  I bet it'll look amazing in sunlight.

Have you worked with the VMR paints before?  Are there any things you have to be aware of with the VMR paint that a typical urethane paint may not be as suseptible to?
I would imagine it is a high solids quality paint.  We are lucky to have a specialty paint supplier willing to create the stock colors and have them on hand.

A pretty liquid blue with green undertones in that lighting with your camera.  It is interesting how many cameras, except the high end slrs, can have a tone that is a little off.  It is far less common today than it was when digital cameras were new.  I bought a cheap digital camera as they were coming out and beginning to be widely available but still very new. The ccd on that camera in bright sunlight could make a bright yellow and orange look as if you photoshopped the picture.  People would swear it was photoshopped the saturation levels were so out of balance.  It cause the photos to take on a green tinge.

I look forward to seeing them in sunlight after you have finished to post paint polishing and final detailing.

Do you wet-dry sand the clear to level it after it has cured, or is that part of your process.  These days with base clear coat paints color sanding has a little different meaning.

If you look at the floor, it's a bit yellowish . . in reality it's not that color. That accounts for the hue of the tank.

The hue is off in the picture, it sure is very blue, not green. Being this is not a candy, this is just a typical urethane BC/CC job. Nothing out of the ordinary. Sure i's nice to have the correct colors ready to go . . but you pay for it. This was a 1/2 pint. That's 8oz . . it is ready to spray. That means you just bought 4 oz of paint and 4 oz of reducer. I call it as I see it, rip off in my mind. But .. .   hey in the scheme of doing a bike, $30 too much isn't  a big deal I guess.  But I call a store manager when the tax isn't right when buying something  :) This i buying premixed antifreeze. You get half a container of water . . not me but . . . . . They have the code and they grab you right by the balls. if you knew the code, any paint store could mix it for a lot less.
The covers are basically done. The tank I will wet sand and lay out for black and then the decal, or decal and black  :) But either way, it will be cleared again at the end, then cut and buffed.

That's definitely a trick of the eye. The two photos on the bottom look more accurate (deep blue).

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"
