Beautiful! When I built this K2 a few years ago I painted it with a blue candy, and while it looks quite light here in this pic taken on a sunny day, in the shade, it was quite dark. I've still got some of this blue candy, I might have to paint my K2 bitsa the same color! ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

Candy is difficult to photograph. If you are in bright light, the silver beneath overpowers the photo and you don't really see what it looks like.

I think you are confusing metallic with metal flake. Most/many paints are metallic, where it has tiny metallic like pieces in the paint. They can be small or larger in size, still very small compared to metal flake. Metal flake is a three, or more step, process that uses very large pieces that are sprayed as a separate step. Or perhaps you are confusing it with a candy that was used on some of the colors? because, there is no "true metallic" term associated with metallic colors. They are very, very common and not such a big deal.

No, let me rephrase my question:

The Planet Blue you are painting is metallic?

[I dont recall my Planet Blue K5 paint being metallic and it was original paint but in fair cond]

Thanks

Absolutely is metallic. Here it's even called Planet Blue Metallic. It wouldn't look the same at all without the metallic mix.

Pete,

My understanding is that candy is hard to match existing paint because the amount you spray determines its brilliance.  Whereas, metallic requires care in matching the flake size and grain.  Is that correct?

Absolutely correct. Overlap has to be equal through the paint job. If a car or truck, you walk the entire side of the vehicle, no painting panels as you go down the side. Obviously a tank is MUCH easier. Still not room for errors. If a bug lands, you are screwed. With a typical paint job the bug can be removed and more paint sprayed to cover the spot . . not with candy. If any fancy work ( flames, etc ) is being done with the candy . . . no room for errors or start all over. Been there, done that unfortunately.

A little bit of candy for you. I wet sanded the tank and applied the decal. I do this a bit backwards, but I like it this way. If I sprayed the black first I think I would damage it while applying he decal. If I cleared the black, then wet sanded it and applied the decal . . that is just wasted work in my mind; not efficient. So I just tape the decal and spray the black. With some glasses on it isn't difficult to get a good taped edge at the decal and spray the black. Then you un-tape and clear everything . .works for me best this way.

I was wondering if you could get a clean black up to the edge of the decal without buggering up the decal when you removed the mask. Nicely done.

Seriously? That isn't a concern at all. I use good products and I never have that problem. When the decal is down, it's down. No Fineline tape is going to disturb it at all.

I don't know what your agenda is but as I've mentioned, I am the one who ordered the paint (pre-mixed) and sent it to Pete, so if there's any fault as far as the paint used, it's mine.

Here is the website it came from, and it's clearly listed as Planet Blue Metallic:

http://www.ct70paint.com/planet-blue-metallic.html

So perhaps you should contact them and make your displeasure known to them.
