points cam
« on: December 27, 2006, 11:37:17 AM »
Now I  am new to motorcycles with points ignitions having gotten a cb400f a while ago. I am reading all the forums regarding maintenance and such. When it comes to the ignition systems everybody says to grease the points cam. My question is what is the points cam? Is it the mechanical advance shaft that the points rubbing blocks run on? If you grease that won't the rubbing blocks just take the grease off after a couple of revs? I realise the advance shaft has a inner and outer so is that what people mean to grease? What is the felt for, just to keep the shaft clean and is there anything you do to that on a regular basis? Thank you.

yes, the points cam is the advancer unit, and yes the grease rubs off to the points rub blocks each revolution, but a small amount of lubricant/grease/oil is still retained on the surfaces which helps reduce the amount of wear... the felt pad as being part of the points plate is usually soaked in a light oil for the same effect..
