Clutch adjuster stuck
« on: September 07, 2017, 02:05:24 AM »
I have a 1972 cb500 and I can't get the clutch adjuster to budge. I've tried banging on it (somewhat...afraid to do it too hard), PB blaster, and heat. Been messing with it for 2 days now. Any tips or tricks out there?

It is stuck at the left engine case. The big slotted screw-like thing in the picture.

I had the same not that long ago, when I had the cover of. I believe it has to do with the cover and the adjuster not being of the same alloy, leading to that typical aluminiumrelated 'almost if welded' corrosion. Can't remember exactly what I did, but after removing the parts at the back side, I believe I managed to tap it out with force. Heating is not a bad idea either. On reassembly it still wouldn't turn, but I estimated in what position it should be and my guess, or maybe my second or third was lucky. So you may polish the rims with steelwool 0000 somewhat. By the time you start adjusting, you may read what Hondaman has posted on this. http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php/topic,165583.msg1914790.html#msg1914790 Good advice that served me a lot.

Do disassemble everything from the inside of the cover, find a socket slightly smaller diameter than the adjuster, cover it with masking tape, hold it against the adjuster and hit it with a big hammer after applying heat to the cover around it. The adjuster is made from brittle thin stuff and breaks very easily - but there are new ones available on ebay at the moment:

Good luck, John
