Yeah mate, I bought an air pistol in England in 1974 and we forgot that it was in the Hillman Avenger hire car when we drove into Belfast and an RUC vehicle stop. Luckily the Australian accents must have put them off because they didn't do a vehicle search, or I might still be languishing in Maze Prison.......
Back in the day there was considerable cross border shopping traffic during the run up to Christmas to avail of price diferentials, mostly south to north. One December in the 80s a southern family got stopped at an RUC / Army VCP while heading South on a cold dark evening. Apparently the armed RUC officer (well they were all armed) was a bit of a bollix and had the driver empty out the car and all the contents of the boot (err Trunk) onto the side of the road. Eventually, when satisfied, he gave the driver permission to put everything back in, and showed a little heart by assisting the gentleman. The car is waved on, crosses the border into the south and eventually reaches home in Dublin. As the driver unloads the boot, amongst the boxes of lego and tins of Cadbury's roses, to his dismay he finds a Hecler and Koch which he certainly had not bought as a gift for anyone and was definitely not part of the car's toolkit.
About the same time an embarassed RUC officer is explaining to his Guv'nor that his HK weapon is now out of the jurisdiction, and worse, it is to be found in that safe haven of the IRA. And all because he used his manly arms to help.
Apparently the "package" discreetly made it's way back home courtesy of the Southern police.
