Start of my 78 Cb750 project

Hey all,

Figured I would start a thread on my build.  Hopefully it will be 90% stock but going for a little unique look.  Not cafe or brat but a little of both.  Maybe a scramble wanna be?  Anyway, I have a garage of parts that I am starting to reverse engineer this bike so any help would really be appreciated!

Looks like you have a great start. I aso have a 78K and it does have the best head of the SOHC motors. I will be following your build.

Looks like an F (750 Super Sport) tank with the fuel door cut out and welded shut with a bung and fuel cap replacing the door.

I've seriously been thinking about taking the stock tank and splitting it length wise, lose the pop up tray and replace with a pop up filler neck.. think it would really emphasize the engine some.. curious about that tank as well.. was than on off the shelf tank??

Why would you need to split the tank??  Why can't you cut out the fuel door and existing cap and weld in a new bung with a vented cap?

I want a narrower tank, same profile of course but I would be slicker imo, been looking high and low at different tanks for the chopper but have the CBR front end sitting and waiting to go on the next bike.. that's the one I'd use a narrow tank for..

Look at my 400 tank on a 750... that makes it a half F.
Save you 13 hours..

I know it's about 1.5 inches narrower than the 69 to 76 K tanks..... the 77 are even wider.

So... the beed is still there.  I built up more metal to match the tank surface.

I did exactly as you said.  Cut the F door out, replaced with new metal and got a aftermarket cap.  A little body work and done.  The bottom got strips of metal welded on the exhisting beed to build it up to the same level as the tank sides.  I was trying for a cleaner look and to make the bottom of the tank run smooth right into the sest pan and bact thru to the hump. One clean line.

that's what I'm talking about!  anything that saves time and looks cool is legit! 

On that note.. anybody repop Honda tanks?? was just looking at the CT90/110 fuel tank as a possible oil tank on the chop lol

If i could get at my old pics I would show you an XL 350 tank on an Amen rigid, the old Hellsinore bike We had..
 If and when I get an Amen again ,  I will try out my Storz XR alloy tank, and see how that looks..
 Bad partvyhey are pricey .. a G note for a new one.   Man I cant wait to put all my exotic parts on a cool new build..

Yeah, figuring out the right tank for that bike is turning out to be trying.. Do dig the bottom of that 400 tank though.. looks like a decent recessed area for coil packs! going to have to locate one to eyeball it on the frame!
