Leaking sending unit ever had that?
« on: September 22, 2017, 04:18:20 PM »
Sending unit started leaking today,  want to ride  500  miles the next few days leave early tommorow.
I guess I better change it, don't think I had this happen before.
I could live with it maybe, but fear it gets worse.. on the road. The other problem is probably have to wrestle it with adjustable pliers I don't think a socket will fit.
Ever had this happen?

You talking about the Oil pump sending unit? Lights up your pressure light?

yeah, I had one start leaking earlier this summer...kind of a biotch to swap one from a spare engine but a wide selection of deep well 12 points and a small pipe wrench got it done.  Oddly, the one I grabbed was different size socket than the bad one.  No idea what is original or what.  bad one was on a k6, replaced with one from a k4.  The k4 one was smaller, so easier to deal with.  Managed to do it without pulling the carbs.
If it works good, it looks good...

Looks, like 26 mm. The bolt on top is 7 mm head.
I cracked mine loose, but could not loosen bolt, it turns taking wire with it.
I rode to storage and back b
Got 2 more, one has black hard plastic top, the other red, maybe softer plastic.
So I rode home 6 or 7 miles.. now it stopped leaking.. strange..

Mine started leaking last year, shortly after restoring the bike. I cheaped out and put Teflon tape on the threads of the small screw securing the wire. That stopped the leak but a few days later the oil pressure light began flickering on and off while riding. Since I have a pressure gauge installed, I knew it had good pressure and that meant I had to replace the sending unit. I ordered a new one off Ebay for $11 and all was/is well.

That "taking the wires with it" was the problem I had on the 550. Turned out that top bolt was stripped and that's where the leak was coming from. Different location but the same issue. I replaced the whole sender like Pachuco and that solved it.
