The Hand Hammered Thread
« on: September 20, 2017, 12:04:42 PM »
I am seriously realizing its time...... To get into some metal forming, before its too late..
I have been thinking of making a custom left side cover for the 750 K.
And thinking often of coppper........ Because its cool..and I enjoy the color range as it oxidizes.
And the contrast of a piece that is part shiny , part tarnished.
So I look at an old fire extinguisher, that had freeze damage. Its a bit thin at .030 , but I figure worth a try... And its like 50 bux plus to buy what I can salvage out of this piece.
Will add a few pics of what I started with..
If you want a shock look at the price of copper sheet. .. a square foot  of 40 thou or 1 mm is 40 bux or more !

The acid in peoples urine (their pee) is a great way to get a varied patina. Do a quick polish of the piece then let several of your friends pee on it. Then wash it off real good after a few hours (wash real good) then clear coat it so it will stay that way.

I know of a guy that did this with a range hood and it came out with more colors than you can imagine. Might even help if they were all drinking different brands of beer before they start "painting"

Easier way , don't wash it leave it outside, only polish part of it or let your pantleg do it..
I am leaning towards increased patina, because I have people rub parts of my bike trying to shine it up.
I wonder How they would feel if applied dirt to their clean bike to show them how I like it to look..
I think a few copper bits will be nice. Like a circle glued to top of oil tank cap, and  2 pieces on the flip gas cap  leaving the center rib chrome.

how are you going to form it? Are you going to make a buck or just try to sandbag/hammer and dolly it?

There was a guy here a few years ago who made sidecovers out of sheet aluminum. He made a wooden buck and then just hammered the alloy around the form. didn't take him long and came out pretty good looking. I forget how he attached them to the bike.

In school here, many shop students made ashtrays that were pounded into a wooden form.
 The Plan.
Carve intended design to full depth in the wooden form.
Attach blank or sheet to top of the wood form, with screws or nails. Leave about 3/4. Inch all the way around the depression in the form, for screwing down.
Then start pounding and stretch the material into the form, then when it takes shape, get it as smooth as possible.
Trim the basic shape out of that, ie..cut off the holdown edge.
Then add thicker strips all the way around the edge, the strips will have mounting lugs attached and be soldered to main piece.  The lugs will start off as a machined pointy bullet shape with a groove around it. Then flatten off the sides, and add groove to lock into grommet.
The mounting lug either has a flanged base to solder, or is drilled and tapped and held to mount with a button head.
Sounds easy , I will probably farm out getting the form routered out..
