Neutral sensor cam.  It lives under the left crankcase cover.  Above the sprocket.  The brass tang it touches is attached to the motor wiring there.  The stud coming out of the block is indexed for it.

It connects to the shift drum correct?

That's how the neutral light is activated. Take off the left side cover then put the shift lever back on an move it up or down, you'll see the shaft where that part sits rotate. There's a wire that runs to the part that touches the piece in your photo. When they touch it creates a ground that activates the neutral light.

I had to adjust mine to fix a false neutral issue, I'll check my photos to see if I took a picture of it.

A bullet connetor slips into the brass tang.  Green wire iirc.  Hard to miss it's the only doodad on that portion of the wire loom.

Gbal, when I rescued my 78 CB550K about a month ago, the neutral light didn't work at all.  Upon further investigation, and after removing the left side sprocket cover with an impact screwdriver, I actually found the little actuator lying down amongst the crud at the bottom of the housing.

I don't know whether or not these are helpful, but here are a couple of photos...

Is the "brass" side up (so that the washer and screw top touches it) or brass side down?  Thanks for the pics too

brass tang gets screwed to the case.  Only fits one way.  The cam only goes on the stud one way.  If ya get smart and try any other ways, something will break and the sensor wont work  :o

That's just fact.  I actually put a little dab of 242 threadlocker on mine, simply because it had fallen out of its place some time over the last 39 years.

It really can only go in one way, and once you get in there and look at it, you'll see how it's supposed to go in.  As someone suggested in a previous response, even in the worst case scenario, you can put it in, mock up the shifter, and simulate some shifting action just to make sure you've got it right before you torque the sprocket cover back on.

As an added bonus, I ended up replacing at least two of the bolts that hold that cover on.  I believe some of those bolts are 55s, while others are 32s, and mine were torqued on there hard enough and had been torn up enough that I needed an impact screwdriver to get them off, and needed to replace them with new ones.

For what it's worth, I put a little Loctite on those too.

I remove the left case cover frequently enough that Loctite would just make life more difficult.
+1 on replacing the stock hardware - I'm really appreciating the allen head bolts on mine.
