Registration ?
« on: September 21, 2017, 01:43:16 PM »
Took my 75' CB 750 K5 down to AAA to register it. Purchased this bike from Minn. and was last registered Feb. 2015. Have the complete Title just needing it registered in Ca.

The AAA representative saw that the Frame tag # ( on the steering neck ) didn't match the Vin # on the Title. I told her that the Vin # on the Title matches the Stamped # on the engine which is what these Bikes have as a Vin #. She says that the frame Fed. # and engine # both have to be the same which I know is Not Correct !  So therefore she would Not Register it  >:(

Now I have to take it to the CHP which is a further inconvenience.

I have literally never had the AAA person in CA actually go look at a bike I was registering, even when the reg had not been paid in several years. Sounds like you just got unlucky with the AAA employee.

I'm pretty sure that is the protocol for the representatives at AAA to do. In fact I went in last week and one representative wanted to look at the bike but I didn't have the bike with me at the time. Now returning this week with the bike, a different representative wanted to look at the bike and discovered that the the frame I.D. did not match the engine I.D.. Remember this is an out of state bike that been registered before. So maybe that's the reason to verify the bike in person?

Anyway, I'm about 100% sure that these 2 #'s Do Not match but just need some further confirmation from other Forum members.

Too far up north to recommend a good aaa to go to.

Some aaa can be a pita to deal with.  Get paperwork started at aaa and take bike to chp for vin check may just be less headache than deal with aaa clerk.

ON SOHC bikes, frames and engine numbers never match [or very very highly unlikely]

In certain states, WI for sure, they used the engine number for titling purposes.
I have not heard that MN did it, but the bike might have been originally from WI.

In TX, that would be no issue, why does CA have to be so tough?

I registered a bike from Arizona to California.  Just have local PD or CHP do a vin check and make an appointment with the DMV.  Yep, I know you have a longer line there and if all your ducks are in a row, then you just pay all the Cali. fees and your good to go.

Because they are control freaks, and know better than the subservient.

The CA titles I have placed priority on the frame vin.  They have a place for engine number, too. You need to have the chp fill out their form for vehicle verification.

Check the chp work.  They "verified" one of my 750s as having the same frane and engine number when it really doesn't.  I'll get that fixed in AZ.

Stev-o,  I would be willing to bet that the State of Minn. like Wi. have their VIN's on the Title off the engine case #'s.  Anyone else have a Minn. bike ?

I called the CHP here locally and left a mesg. No call back yet -go figure.  Don't have a trailer to take the bike to the CHP station, so maybe they will make a house visit ? I just switched plates off my Goldwing when I rode it to AAA and dealt with the ding bats there. Hate to ride it the CHP station and get written up for an incorrect license plate.

If you have bill of sale, then drive the bike to CHP for verification.  Any encounters with the Po Po on the way, just explain what the DMV did to you, and show you haven't been avoiding registration by showing the date you purchased it.  Unless you behave like a jerk, they'll understand.  Maybe give you an escort to CHP.  ;D

Probably, no one will even notice, though.

That very well could be.   My Yamaha came to me from MN but it's not here at the house to verify the VIN.

Don't some states allow for some kind of special handbuilt transportation machine title?

The entire state has become adept at spending someone else's money, and obscuring the cost to everyone.

Just went through this on one of my kawitriples.  Was a Wisconsin bike and had the motor as the vin on title.  Couple emails with dmv investigations and good to go

I bought a bike registered in WI - went to the DMV, got a "travel permit" to ride the bike to the DMV, explained the diff between WI and CA as far as Engine #/VIN vs. Frame #/VIN. They inspected, filled out a sheet of paper and I walked away with the plates in about 45 minutes all-told.

You got a bad agent is all.

Engine and Frames never match, as far as I know.

Well I'm learning something here. I never head of a state using the engine number on the title. I just assumed they were all like CT and VT and used the frame number, interesting and good to know if buying a bike out of state.

Registration of vehicles wasn't federally standardized until 1981.
Prior to that states were free to use any number they wanted.
Some states used frame numbers and some used engine numbers.
Harleys, for example, didn't even have frame numbers until 1969 I believe.

The California DMV should know this.
They should also know that frame and engine numbers don't always match. (whether by design or because of replaced components.)
Never be afraid to appeal to a higher authority at the DMV.

Well obviously the Title I have on this bike from Minn. used the engine # for the VIN. In fact on the Title I have , there's a typed text under the prior owner's address stating "motorcycle engine number" which to me references the Vin # on the title which is located at the top of it . Something that the AAA agents couldn't get thru their head or didn't register with them when looking at the title ?  They were so focused on the frame number at the steering neck which they felt should match the VIN., which we know doesn't match the VIN on the title.

I'm going to go down to the CHP next week and left them fill out a vehicle inspection sheet to take back into AAA or DMV. Shouldn't  have to do this, but dealing with ignorant agents.
