Debris in road
« on: September 22, 2017, 10:54:16 AM »
I happened to be walking today and while in the crosswalk on 6 Mile Rd I noted some garbage in the road up to a 4" lead wheel weight. I walked past but then turned around and kicked it to the curb. Crossing Farmington Rd there was the sharp end of a steak knife, about 5" long. I picked that up and tossed it in the trash. WTH? Running over this stuff is bad enough but if it gets airborne it would do serious damage.
Be careful out there and wear your face shield, get a windshield.

I had to dodge a lost traffic cone that popped out from under a semi in front of me yesterday.
I was in my truck and far enough back to avoid it.
The car behind me hit it. (That'll teach him to maintain a safe distance!)
Hitting it on a bike could have been fatal....

On the way home I saw what looked like half a load of PVC plumbing fittings scattered across two lanes of an overpass.

I ride a Goldwing now, and will pull a trailer too.  I was on a trip up to Minnesota two years ago with my wife's cousin and her husband, who rides a Harley and they wer following me through a rather busy section of the interstate.  I was going along and suddenly there appeared a fender from what looked like a boat trailer, and I hit it with the left trailer wheel.  It got kicked up and went airborne and hit my wife's cousin in the helmet and it broke her visor.  She was alright, but it scared the he11 out of us all.  Was a close call and it happened so quick.
Be careful out there!

In NY I rarely saw anything serious enough to do damage in the road. Too much traffic just takes care of it. Since moving to Ohio I am shocked at the stuff I see on the highway. Yesterday I had a 14 mile drive from south columbus to northeast and I saw at least 1 couch, a beat to crap dryer, a couple of chairs, many large dead animals, 3 front bumpers, 2 different crushed flat exhaust pipes, and an air-conditioning unit. This wasn't on surface streets, this was on a major interstate, most of it was on the left lane shoulder, and almost all of it had signs of having contact with a vehicle. In the past I have seen everything from truck caps to dining tables. This wasn't just "dumped stuff" like I used to see in NY (largest thing I saw was a boat off the trailer on the side of the Grand Central Parkway) this was fell out of the back of a pickup stuff. It's made me much more conscious of the stuff people are hauling.

I also had my first Ohio cigarette flick. In NYC I used to get these occasionally because the volume of traffic is higher and everyone is packed together so it's easy for some numb nuts to toss a cig carelessly and it hit me. I think this one though was intentional because when the cherry hit my face shield I yelled <expletive deleted> really loud and the truck immediately turned left and away from me  plus I was close enough where they had to have seen me (tinted windows so I couldn't see them).

About a month ago while commuting to work a car in front of me ran over what looked like a wheel well liner to a semi-truck.  Huge piece of black plastic.  First thing I thought as it sailed up, seeing how I was to the left and slightly behind the car - 'Welp... goodbye cruel world...'  Turns out as it shot out from under his tire - it kicked straight back and instead of hitting me it smashed the windshield of the state patrol officer behind him.

No it won't. ;D

A month back I was riding with my son. We stopped for the light at 5 Mile Rd, I look down, and there is a 1/2"-13 x 3" bolt near my foot and more out of reach. We pulled over, got a bag from the fast food carryout and filled it full with various hardware. Any bit of that stuff would rearrange your smile. It must have fallen off of a service truck but don't you think the driver would have noticed? ...and retrieved his junk?

Riding back home ( "Oh it's so nice in your touristy area"... Vermont) on the Taconic Highway in New York some New Yorkers thought it would be funny to throw several beer bottles at me as they sped past weaving between cars in heavy traffic.  >:(

I think they were stupid because they were thowing away full bottles of good old Black Label, a beverage of imbecilic imbibers.

I was one of quite a few cars on the south end of Grand Rapids once on a very busy section of US131,all 3 lanes busy during rush hour, that hit a large and long piece of steel angle iron that was laying across the middle lane. I had no room to go left or right and almost missed it but caught it with my left front and took out the tire and bent my rim. Cop was busy that day with all of us strung along the side of the road with flats.
