6v headlight option or switch to 12v
« on: September 24, 2017, 07:13:25 PM »
I am getting a parts list for a cafe build.

I am starting with a 1974 xl250 that I have had for 3 years now.  Used it for driving forest service roads for fishing and decided its time to do something more with it.  I have $350 in it in total and it runs strong.

I plan to loss the battery and go for a more bare look.  I like the look of dual headlights in a vertical fashion.

Anybody know of 6v options or if I can take a 12v and modify it to take a 6v bulb? I have looked at the halogen 6v bulbs as an option for this.

If I cannot find a 6v option that will provide enough light for occasional night driving (not planned), can I take the 6v that is sent to the headlight and the 6v that is to charge the battery (which I won't have) and combined them to create 12v's and still have the 3rd part of the stator producing 6v's for everything else.

I am terrible with wiring and would like the headlight to work (at least dim) at idle as well.

That old XL barely generates enough juice to run the lights and engine even with a battery.
It's highly unlikely you'll be able to eliminate the battery and still run any lights at all.

Okay, I may have to come up with a smaller battery and a way to hide it instead of eliminating it.

Still looking for smaller diameter light options in 6v. 5.75" is about smallest I can find.
