Look What I Did Today
« on: September 29, 2017, 11:29:00 AM »
Trailering  my bike this morning I was forced to panic stop to avoid an accident on the freeway. Under hard braking the bike climbed up out of the chock and tilted up onto it's nose as you can see in the pictures. There is no gas tank in the pictures because I lifted it off the bike and put it in the bed of the truck to stop any gas spill before taking any pictures. Not a mark on the tank, in fact the only skinned paint is on the right frame downtube. The forks and bars are somewhat twisted so that's where I need to start my damage estimate. Sure could have been a lot worse. I'll be adding some channel iron uprights to the chocks to prevent any future problems. Check out the pictures.

HOLY S#*T !! So sorry to see that happen to you. Guess it could have been worse if it got off the trailer. I usually run a couple straps off the back just to keep the rear from walking around, especially if I'm hauling two bikes at a time.

Wait, it's normal to trailer a bike without it being tied down in the rear? What do you guys do, put it in the chock and what else?

Seems crazy to me, I would always tied it down front and rear.

Now, that's something you don't see every day! Glad it wasn't worse.

Tell me about the seat... manufacturer, what it took to mount it, etc. Are you using a stock tank?

Glad you could stop in time. I always tie the rear - I use a chock, 2 front 2 back and never gave a thought not to secure it with the 4 straps. Hope you can get her fixed soon.

Wow, that sucks.. sorry to see that happen.. I've always trailed in the same fashion but I think now I'm going to strap the back as well!

The company that made the seat is Hot Wings Fiberglass. Go to  the vintage flat track website at www.vft.org and click on the links to the different suppliers and you'll find the listing for them. The seat din't fit, I had to split it and widen it enough to fit over the Honda frame. Yes, the gas tank is stock.
Just to let everybody know the bike sustained only a very small amount of paint loss on the frame and everything else came back into line and is just fine.
Amazing!
I will be tying the backs of any bikes I trailer from now on.

ALWAYS tie the rear down
Yeah, I would have thought this to be common sense, but as I travel the roads, I see that common sense is anything but...

I’m sure delighted you or anyone else wasn’t hurt, but for the Pete’s sake, really? No rear strap!  ::) Even if your bike never did a rhinoplasty, the rear is always susceptible to sway during hard turns without being restrained. 2’ time, and it’s safely strapped.

In Bob's defense I have hauled bikes before with no rear strap, don't always do it but will now. I have sold around 9 or 10 bikes the last couple years and do not remember anybody tying the rear down when they left. Most you see being trailered around probably won't have a strap on the back either. His experience is a good learning tool for us all to always prepare the best we can for the unexpected  ;)

I always tie down the rear but have seen many bikes without a rear tie down on the road. The main reason for me is the bikes can tend to hop on bumps and potholes. We pack 6 bikes in an enclosed trailer tight as Sardines and drive through New York and New Jersey where crappy roads abound. I've pulled into rest areas and have expected to see damage from the potholes and ruts. Thousands of miles without a problem and I firmly believe that tieing down the rear is the reason.

I may be new to bikes but not to trailering. Overkill on tie downs... you never need it until the day you need it. Takes an extra 2 minutes.

I think if I build a three rail trailer, i will add loops, so I can slide a bar thru to lock the rear wheels.
Bar would slide through just above the rim, which also prevents wheel lifting..

An old mate of mine broke down on his nice low mileage Laverda RGS about a mile from his home. He phoned one of his friends to come and pick him and his bike up in a flat tray truck. Once they had the bike up on the tray the Laverda guy insisted that it would be just fine if he were to just sit on the bike on the way home....no need for any tie downs at all, heck! why complicate things?.
All went well until the truck turned into his driveway which shot up steeply from the road.
Both the Laverda and the sitter went over the 3ft tray and ended up a in a heap on the bitumen.
Don't think there needs to be a moral for that story.

I use a chock in my truck bed and two ties in front, one through the rear.  I sometimes skip the rear IF I am going just across town and going SLOW the whole way.

I used to haul a lot in a pickup, two on the front, none on back.
Then I would roar down dirt roads trying to get back end to move around..never did move much ..
So I thought I was good..never planned for that though..
Does that truck do stoppies ?
