82 GS1100L now an 81 gs1100, got away.
« on: March 13, 2017, 09:08:13 PM »
I saw a local ad for an 82 GS1100L it's the cruiser model with the chrome rear fender, has a black 4-1 header blue with purple on the tank, appears original in the pic. I got excited for a minute but I'm not as big a fan of the cruiser model. I don't know the miles but the guy has a facebook pic of him riding it last summer. He says tires look good which usually means they're old. Aluminum wheels. He is down to $1,000 on it.

I could do it but that would kill off the bike account recently refreshed by selling a gl1000 for the same amount. What say the crowd?

Dependent upon mileage and condition it is a reasonable price. They were basically bulletproof.  What would be your intent?  Ride or flip?   In this area it would be a tough sell unless it were mint.  Good luck either way...Larry

Flip, but I'm reluctant because of the local economy. A former president came here several times to illustrate the effects of manufacturing job loss. No one did anything about it but that's politics.
I could turn into the crazy motorcycle guy unless I learn how to sell. So far I'm a break even kind of guy, not much point in that. It's like owning a collection of 38 and 40 caliber pistols and seeing a 45 auto on the shelf.

It is difficult to pass on what seems like a good deal but I think you answered your question Don.  You'd probably have another 3 to 500 into it.  Now if it were $800 or less and mileage was less than 40k

Is it chain or shaft drive ?  Me personally I am not a fan of the cruiser style bikes from that period, I like the chain drive standards and think they are worth more also.

There was one model Suz. GS1100L (1980' I think)that came w/ the 16 valve 'E' engine in it w/ chain drive that is so popular w/ the drag race crowd, that one had square little chrome covers for the DOHC on the valve cover rather than the small round ones for the 8-valve motor along w/ shaft drive.A member here in Syracuse,NY. 'Chewbacca' had one a couple yrs. ago but sold it w/o 'going all the way' on it,that one needed some cosmetic work.
Do you have any pics of it Don ?

The 'E' was a nice looking bike in both configurations    http://www.suzukicycles.org/GS-series/GS1100E.shtml

I had an 82' 1100E silver and an 83' 1100E red & black that I bored-out to 1170,ported head,re-phased the crank to exactly 180 deg.,etc.They were both more(power) 'bike' then I would ever need. The idea of 'Absolute Power' and all that..  :D

I picked up an 82 1100 from guy up the street pretty cheap.  A lot of it missing, so I do not feel too bad bastardizing it.

It's a facebook ad, and I let the ad get away. There were too many reasons not to do it. I spent some time learning about the models, it's a cruiser style, shaft drive, not much info, 12 bikes here now, but it sure is in nice shape from what I could see.

oOOPs here it is, been advertised since Oct. it was $1200 recently.

I removed a Windjammer from the front on a very low mileage, original example on one of those 82' GL1100GLZ models such as the one pictured, the man also wanted brand new fork tubes because of a few small 'pitts' so I ordered a pr. from Franks and installed them;I still have his very low mileage orig. fork tubes. The bike handled a Lot better after removing that heavy fairing, imo.I like that blue oem color and the way it looks on the tank;the 4into1 header not so much.

I sold seven Larry, don't I deserve one?  There are 3 S90's all within an hour or so each about $500 I've been hoping they sell soon also.

Is the 81 the year with alternator problems?  or is it later?

Ah, alternator problems. One strike against. My wife said it was pretty though. One mark for.  I didn't contact them to go look at it all day but I'm taking the K0 tins to the body shop in the town where it is tomorrow. uh oh.

I believe it's the four valve engine with adjustable rockers. That's about all I know about them. I swore off newer than 78 bikes and this has factory electronic ignition which I usually despise (at least in Yamaha) but at least still carbs and there is a dyna made for it.

don't make the mistake of assuming that Suzuki is anything like an XS750...Suzuki 4 valve?...one of the best ever...Yamaha triple?...one of the worst ever

Agreed. I let the GS1100 get away. It was a sweet bike but was sold right away.
I owned a Yamaha xs850 for a while. Got it running and was tickled to get it sold. The same with a cb900c. It just wasn't a good example of one. It sounded awesome with a vance and hines sidewinder and megaphone.

I'm decided I'm spending my current funds on the 750K0 that I bought just before joining here. It's ready for paint, the tins are boxed up and in the truck.
