What is the point Car Question.
« on: September 28, 2017, 06:58:29 PM »
Saw an ODDie today,  really wide rims, too wide for the tire, plus the lowest profile tire I have ever seen..
 255 30   size .. what a wasted I think a pothole could take out a rim.
I doubt there was 2 inches of rubber past the rim.

See plenty of those in Seattle.

No different than low-rider trucks, those bouncy air-shock cars (whatever they're called)

Just for showing off.

I've seen one guy at my work who has axle blades - stick out about 4" from the hub.  Don't know if they're sharp - but they are metal.

The tire is also usually smaller in diameter than the rim.

Standard low rider crap. I have seen this with the A-arm suspension relaxed all the way and the wheels lean toward each other at the top about 5 to 10 degrees. If it is in front of me on the freeway I usually pass them so I don't catch any flying parts. Tires probably last 5 to 10K miles at best.

Can you imagine RIDING in a car like that for 5 to 10K miles?  Dang.

I remember as a kid when your car wasn't cool unless it had a set of Gabriel HiJacker air shocks pumped way up with a set of 50's tires on the rear, more points if they were mounted on Cragar's or aluminum slots.

Car culture is an ever evolving thing.

Unfortunately, this so-called "stanced" look that frank described.  Was developed by "tuners" who never paid attention in high school geometry, or physics.

I certainly hope that none of the future "auto customizers" fall under the delusion that "less tire on the ground" is improving the drivability of their cars.

There a beacon on the horizon.  A few car guys are in on it, as a joke.

The guys who slam them into the weeds w/lowering springs used to come to me and want them aligned.
They don't understand why the thing eats front tires. They also don't understand what bump steer is. (I sure do)
It's amazing to actually watch the camber change happen when your along side one. And the fireworks
that happen after dark on a road with dips.. Lowering spindles are a must IMO if you want to lower a vehicle.
I've done a few s-10s and they turned out almost like they were factory. Availability is somewhat of an issue
tho, as drop spindles aren't made for every kind of vehicle. More to look cool than anything else. There are benefits if you do it right for better handling. Some of the junk out there is downright scary to drive.

I have two cars that came from the factory with 35 profile tires 8) Nothing wrong with it. I run a slightly higher pressure in them (42PSI).
Yes, ride is not particularly comfortable, but neither car is supposed to be a "long distance touring sedan". Handling is superb.

Yes I can remember getting pulled over in my hot rod Roadrunner around 1980 and after the cop peeked inside to see what was going on he had me walk to the back of the car with him while he pulled out a tape measure to see if my back bumper was too high.Didn't get a ticket but was told to drop her down a little.  Man those were the days, cheap muscle cars everywhere.

not exactly sure what us old guys are #$%*ing about at this point...I think a few here need to google the word DONK...or are we talking about tuner car mods...or just #$%*ing about these new fangled tire trends in general

You can't stance a car without adding some camber.

The "stretched" tire look is also dangerous, its very easy to pop a bead at speed that way, I've watched it happen.

Mike - my 370Z has [stock] 275/35's on it, that is not what they are talking about.

The car Frank saw had REAL wide rims with narrower tires - I dont like that look either.

Kinda like this...

+1 for the stupid oversized air spoiler on the front wheel drive car.

The only thing it's missing is brat style handlebars!  ;D

Geez those were the days mate, I had Gabriel Hijackers just to level out my (Aussie built) Valiant VIP, it was a bit saggy in the rear end! ;D

I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

"Crazy is a very misunderstood term, it's a fine line that some of us can lean over and still keep our balance" (thanks RB550Four)
