Is my K7 rear wheel actually a K7 rear wheel?
« on: September 30, 2017, 09:16:35 AM »
I got the pictured wheel on ebay as a CB750 SOHC K7 rear wheel, and bought a K8 brake anchor plate from a member on this forum to use with it. However it seems that there is a gap between the bearing on the hub side and the little lip on the brake anchor plate when put together.
The parts list didn't show any spacer between those parts so I google a bit and I found another post from a guy that had the same problem and his rear hub looks a lot like mine including the groove around the hub on the brake side - his apparently turned out to be a 1979 DOHC wheel (thread here: http://forums.sohc4.net/index.php?topic=118702.0)

Can someone from my pictures identify if it's a K7 or something else rear hub I have?

Thanks.

I have this same issue with a wheel that came with one of my 550 projects. A standard 550 backing plate stands out from the hub just like that and for the same reason you describe, the bearing housing is larger than the area of the hub defined by the ridge it is supposed to fit into.

I wonder if your issue is the brake plate being wrong and not the hub.

Hi.

I got the brake plate from a member of this forum that was breaking a K8 so I am pretty sure it's correct, but of course you never know.

However, I don't know if I was exactly clear in my description - the gap is between the bearing and the brake plate on the inside. The outer edges of the brake plate rests on the hub and hence if I where to tighten the axle down, it would be squezed into the hub and unable to turn.

Thanks Bill. As suspected I guess.

I'm using in a build on a non cb bike, so must likely I will just try and source the correct brake plate.

If you have the brake arm on the K7k8 backing plate.. the arm is thinner and cast looking in the Middle, the earlier ones were oval . 77 78 RIM  on K is 17 inch, not sure about the  later ones.

Hi Brian. I just checked the k8 hub from which I removed all the parts for you. Groove you mention in your earlier post does not exist in k8 hub so probably your hub is the problem here. I'm 100% sure parts I sent you are from correct K8 wheel and the same where used also in K7.

Hi Dan, thanks for checking. Figured you knew which bike you where taking it from :)

The rest of the parts fit perfectly and I found a new brake plate locally, so should have something workable.
