1976 BMW R75/7
« on: October 21, 2017, 04:14:31 AM »
I have always liked the BMW air cooled R series motorcycles, but I don’t know much about them. There is a local shop that specializes in vintage bikes and I stopped by the day  and noticed a 1976 R75/7 they had for sale in the consignment section. I asked about it and they said they had completely restored it(I don’t know what all that entailed) and were working on a CB750F three years ago, but the owner got sick and couldn’t pay so they’ve let him keep them there and the owner finally decided to sell them.

The bike has 46,000 miles on it and it looks to be in good condition. The paint is original and I’m just wondering if anyone here has any experience with R75? They are asking $3800 for the bike, although I’m sure I can get them down on the price. I took a couple pictures, but they aren’t the greatest...

If it’s been well-serviced, that’s a pretty fair market price. The fairing is aftermarket but common. Valve guides are prone to needing replacement at 50-60k and if you look at the push rod tubes, those are prone to leakage at the cylinder. If these items have been replace/dealt with, I’d snap it up. But I’m a BMW bigot with a ‘74 R90 project and current ‘09 K1300s  8)

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. a riding buddy of mine has an R80/7. these things are simple but solid. some things are bit harder to do than on the honda cb's, others easier. overall, good bikes. if it looks right to you, you can't do much wrong.

The fairing is not an original BMW "S" fairing. It is an Emgo Viper or a variety of that. I would not bet my life on the paint being original for a 76  75/7.
Of the /7s, the 75 was a less desirable one. /7 had already 1000cc with the R100 in several varieties. It is still a twin shock bike with a rear drum brake. Drive splines are a weak point. Price is not that bad, although 3,800 may be a tad high. Airheads are going up.
