Shooting fish in a barrel even at that range. .223 would definitely be lethal from where he was shooting.

This is another American tragedy of tremendous scale, and although I hope something is done legislatively to at least make an attempt to reduce this kind of senseless violence, past experience shows it's not likely.

Beg your pardon jggr, but this is categorically not true:

Just so you know, there is NO classification of guns that are called "assault rifles", that is a name made up by politicians. By definition any gun used for this attack IS an assault rifle because it is used to assault people. Assault rifle is interchangeable with "scary looking gun" to stir up emotion in the uninformed.

While it's true you can assault someone with any kind of rifle (or a pencil, for that matter), assault rifles are a category of firearms. They are selective fire, with detachable mags, and intermediate caliber. You can differentiate them, for example, from hunting rifles. People I know who hunt don't hunt with AR-15s.

Actually they make for decent varmint rifles at intermediate range.

I agree others using suffering of the families to push an agenda is despicable.

Who know why this happened is right.  Maybe someone said you do this, or I will kill your whole family?  Maybe he was mentally ill and out of control?  Maybe, he was a psychopath?

We can maybe, maybe, maybe until we are blue in the face.  A thousand maybes won't bring those people back.

Some people really are "sick in the head", and need treatment.  Does that excuse this guys actions,  "HELL NO!"  I feel bad for the families who are left to pick up the shattered pieces of their lives.  I don't know what I would do or how I would respond in this situation.

I'm wondering if he had help.

That would be the conspiracy of the year.
The amount of shots fired in the time reported.  Would be quite the spree for an individual using two tripods in two different rooms.
Only way to find out if the 64 year old accountant was villian, or victim, is to scrutinize all the evidence.  The hotel security footage better have been working that day!

Wait, what? Is there any doubt? Clearly a psychopath, but that shouldn't prevent him being considered anything but a villain.

Enough range for sure. But damn, when I heard the rate of fire, those 20 round magazines would last like 4-5 seconds. I've got beta mags for my 5.56, but haven't seen any for the .308 platform. Almost sounded belt fed. On another note, I'm so impressed how our community is responding to help the victims and families. People here have always seemed so selfish, and rude but as of now that not the case.

How in the hell did he get that many weapons up in the elevator without tipping anyone off. I guess it's simple, just seems like a lot of hardware, bagged or not, to go unnoticed.

It's reported he was there for a few days. A couple suitcases a day and nobody would notice. Remember, it was a large music festival and the hotel was probably packed. As for any longer rifles, just think of a hard golf bag travel case with wheels. Just some guesses.

There are many parts of the suspect profile that remain baffling.

Absolutely true, although as expected rabid conspiracy theories are rebounding across the internet at a furious pace, perhaps started by the accusation that he was a Rachel Maddow fan on Gateway Pundit. Fox said he was triggered by people singing "God Bless America" -- and what, he just happened to have an arsenal in his hotel room at the time? Rush Limbaugh and Alex Jones are arguing that he was an ISIS operative. Pat Robertson said it happened because people don't respect the president. Others, in perhaps shades of Dallas, are arguing that there was a second shooter despite no evidence.

A clearly mentally deranged man stockpiled a bunch of easily obtainable weapons and committed an atrocity of a scale we haven't seen in modern days. Although more info will emerge over time, people will fill information gaps now with conspiratorial thinking, some of which will stick but most of which will take focus away from thinking about how to realistically prevent yet another mass murder in the US (hint: it's not beefing up hotel security).

It doesn't make sense.  A man who made his fortune and was set to retire.  Had every opportunity to fly off to the Phillipines if he hated 'murica so much.  I can't even rationalize it.  Dude could have lived the life of a King overseas.  Opting for a killing spree and suicide instead?
If it turns out he was - in fact - a lone gunman.  This challeges all assumptions we can make in suspect profiling.

Plenty of dumb ideas out here, job security I guess. Most things are put to a stop here before they even start due to preventative measures most people know nothing about. You'll be fine.

...how to realistically prevent yet another mass murder in the US (hint: it's not beefing up hotel security).
Do tell?

Sensible regulation. Pretty simple really, and there are vast lists of things more regulated than guns in the US. A vast majority of people support it. When the NRA lobbies for allowing people on the no-fly list to be able to purchase guns, when they lobby for removing obstacles for the seriously mentally ill to purchase weapons (something Trump signed in February), when they lobby against waiting periods and strong background checks and closed loopholes for restricting unmonitored sales and restrictions on devices to make assault weapons fully automatic and restrictions on large capacity magazines, and when the politicians who are in the NRA's pocket go along with it, nothing gets done. The tired arguments by second amendment (reminder -- written when guns were single shot, it took a while to reload, and guns were a necessity for feeding and protecting one's family) absolutists just don't hold up, and they are in the minority. The slippery slope "they're taking away all of our guns!" argument is bull#$%* and doesn't hold up either.

Before anyone #$%*s their pants, I'm not against gun ownership. I don't hunt, but my brother does, and I have fun target shooting. But regulations and obstacles on the seriously mentally ill won't affect my brother and his hunting one bit.

But you probably know all of this, it's not like anyone with half a brain hasn't heard both sides of the argument and I'm not going to be baited into some #$%*ty name calling rant. Fifty-nine people are dead, and idiots like Tomi Lahren are arguing that if more people had guns they could have prevented it. I keep thinking maybe this will be the one where something actually gets done, but most likely not.

There you go, have at it.

Someone please tell me how to solve it, Bill. I’ll be happy to support it 100%. I simply haven’t heard a solution to the real problem. Only window dressing for a house afire. Like most regulation...

You're completely right, no sense in trying to do anything. We should all just throw our hands up and pretend there is no solution and live with the expectation that every other day or so there will be a mass shooting, and every once in a while one with dozens of victims because that's the price you pay for freedom. No sense in looking at what other countries have done -- American exceptionalism and all that -- and no sense in anything more than "thoughts and prayers" for the victims and their families. It's every American's right to stockpile 50 firearms, including assault rifles converted to automatic fire, and enough ammunition to kill dozens and wound hundreds. So says the NRA -- the true harbinger of American freedom. No sense in arguing that one Amendment to the Constitution might need, uh, amending, because if you do so then all of our constitutional rights are in danger. Remind me again, what "well regulated militia" was this guy -- or any of the other perpetrators of mass violence in the US -- a member of again? If you actually read the second amendment...
