One of the most entertaining short flat track racing events is Harley run what you brung -- full dressers trying to turn on a short dirt oval!
For those events, a Sporty with 19" dirt tires has a distinct advantage.
I watched one of those ,it was hilarious !

Considervin a lot of countries until the not too distant past their drove mini and micro sized cars and sometimes they did not have more or much more than 1000cc motors in them.  The 1800cc wing is as big and bigger than many of the car motors in my first few cars...
It is like driving a big torquey and powerful car motor on two weeks with vast improvements.  This isn't no mower engined two wheeler or go cart...
I teased a guy whom I thought was a good friend when he bought a cruiser HD about it being a poser bike and I am truely not a fan of cruiser bikes, just never liked them and how they rode.  He did not like it and basically went off on  me and now will not answer phone calls or emails, despite saying we were all good.

Oh well, cannot live your life worrying about what others think or trying to please others whom are not important in your life.

Enjoy a ride and  do something nice for someone important to you, maybe give your bike or a project you got going a little attention and give others a smile for no reason.  It will make them wonder what you are up to and may brighten their day...

From what I gather from talking to various pirates, bigger is better. Those big horrible handling baggers are more better, a sportster is smaller, has a smaller engine, and is lighter so it sucks. These are the same people who go on group rides at half the speed limit, with police escort, dressed in full on pirate attire. Seems boring to me but I guess is LARPing is your thing it could be cool.

It’s a beast when you whack the throttle and handles like a luxury sports sedan. If I were going cross country again, it would be under my tush in a heartbeat.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis

I find the BMW bikes appealing, along with the Suzuki V-Strom/"Wee-Stroms"
Not sure if it is still true as I haven't kept up the past 1/2 dozen years but Suzuki had the best FI/engine management systems back in the 2010-2012 timeframe.  Not on all models of course...but they had some of the best technologically as well as in reliability area.

Bike styling today is sure something controversial. All the designers went to the same school and everybody tries to emulate the other guy. Personally, I hate the multitude of floating panels one above the other. Times when you could reach below the tank and adjust the idle speed with a simple twist are long gone!

Not for me... and I always have a kicker as well.
The smile on my face when  I am on the open road ain't much smaller than the smile on a guy's face that has 16 x the money into his bike..     and I will  probably  never  hole up a few days waiting for a module to arrive so I can continue..

Your time would be better spent, actually riding with him and seeing if it works..  too many people want to steer everyone else in to riding what they like... big waste of energy.
A cruiser can ride across the country  easily..  a good chunk of America can be pretty boring on a sportbike..

Those days left when bikes went to fuel injection.

More considerations for manufacturers these days beyond appearance - emissions for one.

There are benefits though - my R1200GS has fully electronic throttle control and the exceptional cruise control that goes with it.  Saved my arms some soreness on a few very long rides.
