Dwell meter
« on: October 02, 2017, 04:11:42 PM »
After reading so many posts about dwell meter I was considering to buy one. Looked at my local classified and came across two following options. Respectively 35$ and 25$

Wondering if experts can advise which one to go for?

Unless the Snap-on has been dropped it is going to be a better gauge.  They still go for big money used in online sellers auctions.

The Actron CP7605 is a good tach dwell meter too...fwiw.  recommended previously in this thread...
I have an inexpensive Sun Pro Tach Dwell meter..  some of the better timing lights have the capability to dial in the advance you wish as well as to give you the tach reading and dwell.  Some are capable of handling 2 cycle and 4 cycle motors as well as dealing with 2-12 cylinders and even some modern ignition systems.

Correction on the dwell meter I referred to being one of this thread, there is another thread on tach dwell meters I had been following and confused with this new thread... sorry.
Let me know if you have an issue locating it and I can give you a link when I am on my pc, can't do it on the tablet at the moment...

Where is he? There might be someone on list nearby who could serve as your proxy to pick up and ship it to you...
people are often helpful on the list.
Never hurts to ask...

One could consider an automotive DMM (often advertised as engine analyzer) that has tach and/or frequency and dwell and/or duty cycle. When I bought mine, they were bloody expensive, nowadays they're almost as cheap as an ordinary DMM. Although the needle of an analogue meter reads nicer than interpreting digits, a digital one can easily replace the DMM that you want to carry when you're on a long (holiday) trip.

Other option could be to buy a good timing light that is modern and will give you a digital read out for tach, dwell, advance, voltmeter, etc...take a look at the better timing lights and see the feature sets.  Self powered units have some advantages, especially when dealing with 6V bikes.  If that is not needed, then  self powered has no advantage other than hook upeasy and less to have to route where heat or belts moving or chain or other moving parts to get to your timing area of the motor.  Do realize many modern cars , if not most, have no adjustment for timing, dwell, advance etc. It is all compuuter matrixed and controlled.
