PD50 carbs vent lines help
« on: October 07, 2017, 01:36:37 PM »
I'm not referring to the carb over flow lines but the vent lines attached to the T connectors on the gas line between the carbs. As near as I can figure these 2 lines should each go to a third T which vents somewhere up high on the bike. I have the 2 lines but they vent down low and leakage is a problem. Maybe I'm missing something but it seems to me that unless the vent ends up higher than the level in the gas tank they would leak whenever the petcock was left on.

Any help would be much appreciated.

thanks,
Sandy

Vent lines are located at the top of the bowl reservoirs.  They are there to equalize pressures inside the bowl.  Now way the bowls should be filled high enough to dump fuel, unless the carbs are upside down or you have a localized gravity inversion.  perfectly normal to have vent lines routed to near the bottom of the bike.
In fact, you do NOT want vent lines to run up high, as dust and dirt would then trickle downward and enter the fuel bowl.

Maybe you are missing some important function assignments of the lines you are observing.  Perhaps a picture of your concerned items might clarify.

Thanks Lloyd.

You're absolutely right. After looking at this again it is obvious that the only way for fuel to get into these lines is if the level in one or more bowls is way too high. Not sure how I messed up checking levels because I did the clear tube check. The only thing I can think of is   that having the petcock shut off when I did it caused me to mess up. Thinking about it I think a sticking float could cause this although I would expect fuel leaking out the normal overflow tube(s) as well.

many thanks,
Sandy

If your vent lines are flowing fuel, but the overflows aren't, maybe check the overflow tubes for blockage?  They should overflow from a lower fluid level than the vent tubes.
