Saving A CB350F
« on: October 03, 2017, 06:34:55 PM »
Starting a thread to track this build. I'll confess, I've had this bike a few years, but only in the past year have I made any attempts to get this project going. Bike is completely disassembled at this point, engine is on the bench and the top end is peeled off. I've already bought a ton of parts that I noted needing replacement as I stripped the bike down. Body work is at the paint shop - and I'll tease the fact that I'm not sticking with the original color... This is a snap of what it looked like when I found it:

One huge bonus with this find was the fact that the bike was complete - including the factory exhaust. When I looked it over for purchase, I checked the mufflers for any sign or rust or rot. Was keeping my fingers crossed that they'd clean up well... you be the judge!

Those are GORGEOUS! What I wouldn't give to have a set like that on my 350F...so jealous!  :D

This is what it looked like with a simple wash (prior to tear-down) Both fenders are toast, as are the handlebars, the headlamp ring, and may other shiny bits. I've been able to locate pretty much everything I needed, including the rear grab rail. The original one cleaned up ok, but was just not up to my standards for such a highly visible part - I sourced a new reproduction unit from CMS. If you look closely, the lower fork cover on the right side of the bike actually belongs on the left side. There is a cutout that was made to clear the disc brake hardware in the event of a deep dive of the forks. This should have been a tip-off for me, but I didn't put 2 + 2 together until I was breaking down the forks and steering head. Someone had already installed tapered bearings for the steering head! not upset about that at all, but need to pay attention when putting this back together...

Oh, and another interesting bit (for me, anyway)! This dealer tag shows this bike was sold at a dealership that used to be just down the street from where I grew up and where my Dad & I bought several new bikes. Dad bought a 1969 S90 from them, his first bike @ age 38! He soon bought a 1971 CB750 (the candy gold family heirloom that I have now). I bought my first bike from them, a '71 CT70-H (the 4 speed/clutch model, no sissy 3 speed auto for this kid!) @ age 13. I'm hoping to be able to create a duplicate of this dealer tag and put it on the 350F when its done...

Nice original bike, I would just do a clean up on it and ride it.
I have an original 1972 CB350f with the standard pipes all I needed to do was replace the fork seals give it a bit of a Tune, clean the carbs, new carb manifolds and its a runner nice bike to ride also have an original CB500 as well me and my partner take them out on various occasions and she really likes the CB350f because its light and nimble to ride.

Amazing week! I got the top end of the engine torn down over the weekend, but had to fight with the screws that hold the carb insulators onto the head. Not one of them would budge despite trying my best JIS driver bits, a JIS impact driver, or the down-n-dirty vice grips on the screw heads. I ended up drilling out the screw heads. Wouldn't you know it? The screws came out with my fingers once I knocked off the screw heads. GAWD I HATE THOSE JIS SCREWS! One surprise was the head gasket - it's 100% copper! I've never seen one of those. It's looks almost pristine, trying to find out if I can re-use it or not. Certainly looks more robust than the aftermarket unit I got in my gasket kit. Dropped the head and the cylinders off at my local machine shop yesterday morning. Kevin said it would be 2 or 3 days. He called later that afternoon and said they were ready! He did say he had to plane the head just a tiny bit as he found some irregularities. Otherwise these are ready for painting!

i am only speculating but, I’d think if you annelaed the gasket, it could be re-used. At least I don’t see why not... :-\

OK, I've been 'schooled' on this whole head gasket thing. What I thought was a solid copper gasket was actually a replacement head gasket that had a copper spray applied to it. A mechanic looked at this for me and pointed out a few things that confirmed this. So now I'm just going to replace this like it was a normal gasket.

Very nice, lots of sparkle in the color! Everyone knows we can't resist shiny sparkly things!
Keep pictures of the resto coming. I love the little 4's, I've often thought I'd do one after my 750 is done. The trick is to find a good one to restore.

I had a local shop paint these for me. I'm kinda color-blind, and I know I suck at paint. Some stuff you leave to the experts. The shop I used for previous projects closed up, so I had to hunt for someone to take this on. Many regular body shops won't touch this stuff, but the smart ones realize that work like this is good 'filler' when they are between jobs. The painter at this place is a bike guy and he knew exactly what I was after. I was not a fan of the original dark blue (almost black if you ask me) and had been looking around for other examples of restored CB350F's. I found a few examples that were OEM silver. From what I could tell, this looks like it was a Euro color. At any rate, I really liked it. Of course there are no color codes, and I never expect to see another silver CB350F roll up next to this one, so I went with what was in my imagination. In speaking with the painter, I got talking about all the metal flake colors that used to be around in the 70's. He explained that he couldn't do that, but what he could do was amp up the metallic in the paint and make it resemble that. I looked at some paint chips (said the color-blind guy) and said 'Let's go for it!'. His boss was nervous, and agreed on the condition that I stop by once they completed the initial color and 1st clear coat to give a final approval. They would be scuffing the tank, applying the decal, and shooting the final clear coat after that. Needless to say, I really dig the way it came out. They fixed the dings in the tank and shot everything the same color. The only hiccup was a bit of dirt in the final clear coat on the tank, which the painter buffed out without a problem.

Still moving along on this project. I get busy doing work and forget to grab some snaps of what's going on! Frame is now fully disassembled and ready for blasting. The original VIN tag is in rough shape, so thinking I'm going to replace with a repro unit. This battery box is a total PITA! From trying to figure out how to pull it from the frame (you gotta turn it just right and pull it out of the right side of the frame), to all the little grommets, and all the complex surfaces to sand blast - lot of effort for such a small piece of the puzzle! Pile of parts headed to the powder coat shop is growing...

Got the pesky shock bushings pressed out. Used the sockets method along with my bench vise, some penetrating oil, and a bit of heat. They wouldn't even budge until I hit the swing arm with the heat. Guess I should've sandblasted AFTER doing this. No worries, I see many places I missed...
