or VMR paints makes one

Wow, that one is WAY past my capability!
The 4-layer set that Don sold was about as far as my painting skills could reach, but it always worked well.

Thanks, PeWe! This should do it.
It looks to be a urethane paint (instead of the old candy-layer type), does anyone have some advice for how to use this stuff? I haven't used urethanes before, don't know what to watch out for? I've shot mostly lacquers or the old (probably now illegal?) 4- and 5-layer color kits with the catalyst-mix paint that is supposed to kill you on contact, or something like that...

One thing I learned about those Dondirtbiker paints: gnats love it, like nothing I've ever seen before. The bike on the cover of my book is sporting the 3rd re-do of that paint job, because in both of the first 2 attempts, gnats appeared out of nowhere and kamikazied  themselves into the paint, everywhere! They made little black, tapered streaks where they landed and burrowed in, dissolving themselves in the attempt and making little black bumps, dozens of them, on the tank and sidecovers. In the 3rd attempt, I made a closet in the garage and blew a fan across the top of it to lift the fumes up and out, and closed myself in with respirator and all, just to paint it without the bugs. Even then, one found its way into the garage during the last sidecover and went straight into the paint, leaving its little black trail on the bottom left side of that cover. It's still there, perfectly preserved. That was the weirdest thing...!

Insects in the fresh paint is what I remember when my tank was painted early 80's. A huge moth started to fly circles over the wet paint and suddenly crashed into the tank drugged by the thinner. Waste of time, work and money.

Wasps loved the sweet smell of 2k + thinner too. Small flies, just wait and remove when paint had hardened, the small dots after the legs could be removed with polish or fine sanding if lucky.

Urethanes are that same kill you or hurt you permanently polyurethane paint you are familar with...So, ideally... no body contact with the overspray and definitely do not paint without great ventilation and a good respirator, if you start smelling anything then it is time to change your filters on your mask.
Goggles are recommended, definitely gloves and paper suit if you want good protection.

Just like you need the same good paint protection if you are going to use the 2K Spray Max products.

Repaint supply online has good prices on Spraymax if you ever need it.  They can put anything you can provide a code for in the SprayMax cans. The 2K activator cans have a limited shelf life, so only buy them when you are going to use them in less than a year from purchase and check the dates on the labels for the use by date.

More toxic it is, better it will become ;)
I remember the car industry start with water based paint in the 70's. Giant rust holes after 3-4 years.

Yeah, I owned an early 80s Chevy that had paint failure in less than 4 years, finally after about 7- 8 years we sold it and about a year later the class action suit against them was settled where they would repaint the car for you or give you something like $250.  Far better to take a repaint, if it would be any good. $250 was rather insulting really.
That was the first and last Chevy I ever owned.  They treated us awful on complaints about the paint failure and more or less said you get what you pay for as it was not one of their highest priced cars.
My wife's family worked in the auto industry for GM, that did nothing for bringing us back when we bought another car.  I won't buy their products.

Roger that: the single worst car I ever owned was a 1972, brand-new, built-to-order for me by GM, El Camino. In one year, 37,000 miles later, the paint was falling off in hand-sized chunks everywhere, the engine had been out 3 times for new rear seals (402 CID), the tranny shifter had to have the reverse lockout completely removed because it rusted itself out (no reverse and could not take the keys out of the ignition, then), the posi-trac differential had lost the clutches entirely, and every single time it went into the shop I had to 're-fix' it myself, because they could never align the power steering pump, ever, and this would throw all the belts off as soon as it reached 3000 RPM. Three times, they did this. It took 20 minutes to change the first 6 sparkplugs, and the balance of 8 hours to get the last two. It never got over 8 MPG, even on the hiway. The 'cowl inductor' worked for just 8000 miles, then never worked again, and no parts could be found for it - and it wasn't even 1 year old!

I've never touched another GM since I sold it to the first poor fellow who came to my door with $1500 in his hand (I only took $1300 of that, felt bad for him): I paid over $4400 for it, in 1972 monies, too. I actually only drove it for 11 months, parked it the last two because the differential slipped so badly that it squiggled all over the road when wet outside. What a piece of s...

The GM paint was failing on cars in the 90s and 2000s just the same.  Peeled right off.

+1 on VMR Paint.  http://www.ct70paint.com/   Their paint is very forgiving, and results in a high-quality finish.  They will match your vintage color exactly.  Just be prepared to wear a good quality mask.

the base coat clear coat urethanes are easy to spray

spray base coat till you have good coverage with no thin spots and then pull back the gun and mist on a lite layer to even the metallic out

be careful for sags in the metallic, it is heavier than the paint and will sag first so go easy

when the recommended time has past, shoot the clear for your shine

if so desired spray a couple of extra coats so when dry you can sand out any imperfections like bugs and dust then buff

like what others said be careful of the fumes, they cause lots of issues like liver failure, cancer, etc

and most importantly, show us pictures later

Thanks for the detailed tips! I quiver at the thought of sags, and too often have ended up spraying it too dry in my attempts to avoid them. With this particular color, my trepidation is due to having painted it now 7 times to get 2 tanks, so far. In the Dondirtbiker kits, it was VERY easy to have the color come out much too dark, looking almost orange-red, if the layers got too deep. Also, all of my bikes done in these colors have been 'true restos', so they don't get the clearcoat at the end. The original bikes were simply not that shiny, and in the kind of shows where those bikes went, too much shine caused demerits in the "resto points" categories. Even the bike on the cover of my book has no clearcoat on it. That hasn't seemned to bother it, either: I see it now and then, and it still looks good. :)

I have rubbed out the old lacquer paints, but do you have any words of wisdom for how to rub out (or "cut back") the clearcoat in this stuff? I'm all ears...

Clearcoat is good for scratch protection. I clear coated a solid 2k red I did in the 80's. Difficult to scratch it. Same with my car that is the typical Audi silver.
Some paints seems to be water based except the clear.
There are no "satin" clear available for less shine?

Got another question about it: someone mentioned (elsewhere) that this type of paint needs to be "adjusted" with 'reducer' (or something like that) for different temperatures when spraying. What is this science about, and what rules of thumb should I use for it? Summer is over here, it won't be over 70 degrees again until May or June, now. So, I'll be spraying pretty cold, I think?

For me I would say get some heat where you are painting it and try to maintain 70.  follow the mixing ratios and you should be set.

X2 on temps in spray area to be 70 at min for paint to lay down correctly and cure/recoat times to be accurate.  Might be worth trading services as evo has offered.

base coat usually thinned 50/50 with urethane reducer and my preference is medium its a good compromise of wet out and quick dry

the clear is sprayed usually straight but i like thining it some for flow out

just my experience

it is easy to get good results with base/clear urethane systems especially for the home painter

again watch out for the fumes, they cause cancer
