Here is what i keep thinking.. Most headers are far bigger than port exit..
Now until the pipe gets smaller than that..is it really restrictive..?

It certainly did not slow his bike down..

Good question... I suppose if it's compatible size but not smooth (from welds) it could cause disturbance and restrict it slightly but I dunno if it'd be appreciable.

I also have an xr650l and one of the most common 'mods' I hear people do off the bat is to grind the welds down inside the header right at the exhaust port. People claim you can gain a HP from that but I dunno if anyone has proven that.

Finally got around to installing this today.

I converted to 40mm studs. 45 would have made life easier though. Before I had the stock bolts and spigots.

Installation was a bit tricky as the bends in the system drew the whole exhaust up a bit and into the oil pan. It's currently touching the pan, which I'm concerned may lead to damage over time. I'm going to email ripple rock to see what they think. Everything else is bang on. With the whole system hooked up with the springs the muffler mount is exactly in line with the passenger peg bracket.

It's my fault, but I didn't realize this eliminated the ability to run passenger pegs. Oops. Good thing my wife got her own Sohc4 last year!

I have no experience with exhausts held by springs. Should they be 100% air tight?  When I fired it up I could see wisps of smoke coming out where the headers hook up. I used new copper exhaust gaskets so I don't think it's a gasket leak, but maybe where the headers slide onto the spigots? It looked to clear up after a few minutes I think.

Here's where it hits the pan

Sorry no video. I have one but it was running rough. Realized #2 wasn't firing after seeing the other three headers start to turn bronze from the heat (normal for stainless). Turned out to be a wet plug. Fired right up nicely after and I forgot to shoot a video. It sounds fat and sporty, loud but not absurdly so.

100% sure! You can see in my first photo I have the original spigots with their corresponding gaskets under them. Unless there were two gaskets in there, I got em.

I emailed ripple rock to ask what kind of clearance to expect as their website photos show what looks to be nearly an inch of room. It might be my fault, but I doubt it really. I think the bends are just a hair tight.

When did you buy your exhaust? I heard back from Ripple Rock, apparently the photos on their site are of an older design. The system has since been redesigned to allow for oil changes without removing the pipes, and also hugs the bike much tighter. They just installed the same one on a 750 in their shop, and I'm waiting to hear back if the collector piece touches their oil pan or if there is supposed to be 'daylight' between the exhaust and the bike.

As for the smoke around the spigots, I think that may have just been some oil and wd40 I used to help the pieces slide together burning off. The real test will come after I go for a ride. I should be able to tell if there are any leaks from the sound and backfiring during engine braking. That'll have to wait for spring though.

A bit of searching the forum and I found photos of your Hindle 550 system. It's a totally different design, pretty cool looking. But The issue I have I don't think would be possible on yours since the two pairs of headers collect around the oil pan. Mine has a 'Y' piece directly under the pan, and has a slight upward angle, which is where my contact happens.

I just wonder if the adaptors might be "adjusted" by slightly loosening the lower nuts and tightening the uppers. It would take so little to get clearance at the bottom.

Hmm good idea. I'll give it a try! I've got a few sets of exhaust gaskets too so I could try tightening them after the exhaust is in place.

Ripple rock sent me photos of their 750 with the same system on it. Its sits very close to the oil pan but doesn't actually touch it, so it looks like mine has just been bent a touch more. It's designed to sit as close to the bike as possible, so I can see how if the first or second header bends were just a hair too much it would result in the horizontal section contacting the engine at some point. I don't think this is a major issue worth looking into an exchange, just trying to alleviate some stress in the system.

Here is the attachment for the muffler. It's the only attachment point other than the spigots.

Here is a photo of the original system. I believe both versions are still available. Mine was a fairly early system hence the early design (no gap between 2 and 3).  Overall I have been very happy with the system Its holding up good and sounds fantastic, Only complaint is its going to be problematic to add an oil cooler adapter that i am needing for my big bore, but i happen to know Kemp has a cooler adapter in the works that will work with this early design.

I also have this vid for a little idea on sound, this is a 16" long muffler

If you temporarily remove the hangar bolt you pictured, can you push the muffler down and create enough space? You should only need to move that bolt hole lower by a 1/4". That should create an 1" of space underneath.
+1 on the above.. Unless the pipes press fit on the head , it should easily move at least 3/4 of an inch at that point.

What do you mean press fit on the head? There are spigots which the pipes slide onto. No clamps though! They are a very tight fit held in place with springs. I'll check it out next time I'm in the shop. I just figured levering it down at the pipe would introduce some stress or leaks at the head

That's a great looking pipe Mark, I'm thinking of putting a different pipe on my bike, so I might take the plunge. I use a special "Wurth" clear silicon exhaust sealant on all my bike's headers, it's the same stuff that most bike manufacturers use on new bikes nowadays, I had to buy it from a shop in the UK because I couldn't find it here, but my 46 year old headers weren't in perfect shape, so it's good insurance. A thin layer between your spigots and header pipes will take care of any smoke seeping out.  ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

For some reason, the Royal Enfield crowd use the clear RTV bathtub caulk on the head pipe on the 500 Bullet...

That would probably work Charlie, I tried another silicon sealant on my BMW K100RS exhaust and it stunk for the first couple of rides, then I saw that my Triumph Rocket III had clear silicon on its headers, so I did a forum search and found that Wurth silicon special 180 was what the UK riders were using, so I bought some. Good stuff! ;D

The pipe is great!! It sounds SOOOO good and is holding up really well. A small bracket pushed the pipe down 1/2” and I have no clearance issues. It’s a learning process on what order to take it apart and put it back together, but no big deal. I really, really like how it sounds. At idle it’s a thick, low, mean modern sounding hum. And redline it just screams. Not too loud though! I’m not worried about the police getting on my case

Not loud screaming with the short pipe?
I ordered both just for sure. Order afterwards should be too costly. Kemp wrote that the longer gives more hp when I asked about the difference.
I have not mounted it yet since the vehicle inspection will probably be easier to pass with the 4-4 still on the bike. This will be the last inspection ever on the bike. New law where old veterans does not need that inspection.
I'll use the longer pipe first, then visit the dyno.

My first impression is the very low weight of the pipes.
