Now are the hard months
« on: October 07, 2017, 07:05:48 PM »
We're finally into Fall here in Seattle and we're entering what I call the hard months.

Low 40's in the morning, upper 70's in the afternoon.
Scattered showers, gusty winds, dark in the morning, (blinding) sunset in the afternoon.

In the winter it's fine - it's cold, wet, and dark all day every day and it's easy to deal with.  But now - you can choose to either freeze, get soaked, or sweat all on the same day.

Which brings me to an annoyance.  All my gear seems to wear out about now as well.  The side zipper on my Sidi's broke, so I need to start looking for a new pair of boots.  My helmet chin strap is starting to wear out and fray, the front tire on my R1200GS is worn out (but not the back!), and I'm due for the 42,000 mile tune-up.  I see heavy expenses in my future.

It's supposed to be a pretty nice fall season here in New England, but predictions are for a above average snow and colder temps this winter. AWESOME! January and February are rough here.... by March, I'm out of my mind. At least my beloved Patriots play deep into the post season (maybe not this year) and make winter bearable.

I've rode more this summer than I have in years. I'm about ready for the winter. I've got a Ducati I'm dying to build this winter when I have the time.

Meh', past simple vs past participle.

Though, since I didn't give a starting point, 'rode' isn't technically incorrect.

In conjunction with the contraction "I've",  "I have ridden" is the correct English phrasing grammar.  "I rode" would also be grammatically correct.  But, "I have rode" isn't.

Be comforted that you got your point across regardless of grammar.   It just made me cringe a little.  ;D  (And, I was bored by today's other events.  So, it's just an FYI.)

JUST ABOUT EVERYBODY has helmets and other gear on closeout, so pick up some new gear to ride safe.
Shinko makes a decent tire but not a long lived grippy tire.
Touring version is probably better choice than all perf because of increased rain handling and bit longer life ...especially for PacNW. Try one for the front and you will know if you like it, for about $50 they are pretty good value.

If you can find a good shoe repair shop they may be able to change the zipper in the boot.  Unless they are due for replacement already.

I lived in Cap Hill for a few years before moving to LA.  I do not miss the Washington weather, that is for sure!

Any chance you're referring to the famous "seattle freeze"?  :o

October through November is the best time here in North Texas.  Mid-50's on the ride to work and 70-ish on the ride home.

I've never found a satisfactory solution for cold weather gear.
I have electrics, heated grips, thick gloves.  None of it really works as well as could.

Frozen fingers are just something to be endured I suppose.  Only so much that you can do at 20F and 70MPH.

The boots are toast - too many pinholes in the toe, no longer waterproof, besides they smell terrible.  ;D

My solution for cold weather gear was a Vetter V with lowers.  Pretty much eliminated wind chill.  Engine heat flowed right onto the legs.  Bates gauntlets, bomber coat and scarf, later replaced with a First Gear MC lined coat,  Side Zipper Ski pants easy on and off, and Frye Boots w/thick socks.  Shoei Helmet, of course.

This was good and comfy for 33F morning rides.

Luckily it was only 88 today with 98% humidity! Hoping  to start riding more soon!

So, the strategy is to lie to people you are asking for help?

I think I'll be busy going for a ride.

Good luck!
