Topic: Having trouble re-threading throttle cables to throttle tube...

Hi - I decided to flip and lower my stock handlebars on my CB550k, and although I'm completely green at any modifications, everything seemed to go OK....until it came time to re-fit my throttle cables onto the throttle tube. I can get one cable back in the tube easily enough, but the tighter cable is a bastard and I just can't get it back on?! I was using needle-nose pliers to help, but it's too tight to work the cable end back into the slot.

Any tips or tricks to this? Any help appreciated.

Are you mixing up the push and pull cables? They have different ends, and each will only fit in it's correct hole.

Did you loosen the ends at the carb side? You should!

Hi Rob, no I didn't loosen the cables at the carbs. Is that tricky? Will that mean rebalancing the carbs?

No, just loosening 3 m6 nuts and disconnect the cables, carbs can be left where they are.

Now why would you want to do that?   I could understand changing bars but flipped over stock bars sounds goofy.

Yeah, sounds weird, but I just wanted to get a feel for what Clubmans or clip-ons might feel like as you can't "try before you buy" with handlebars. Also, I just wanted to get some experience changing the gear and learning how it is put together etc.

Without rearsets upside-down handlebars are just going to be uncomfortable, and possibly dangerous. Be careful.

Yep, thanks Gene - I probably won't ride with them that way - just learning and playing around with position etc.

BTW - to change handle bars, the throttle cables do not need to be disconnected. The entire R control can just slide off after the bars are loosened and moved over.

Sure...happy to help.   Do you want "racer" bars?  They are very uncomfortable!   Superbike bars are excellant, I have them on a couple of my bikes...

Keep in mind that with lower bars, especially clubmans, your cables [clutch and throttle] and brake line will be too long and need to be replaced

True but only if the bikes wiring is in the handlebars.  His is not.  ('77 model)

Maybe. It looks neater. What are the pros and cons. I'm guessing it's harder to wire thru the bars.

Pro: cleaner install
Con: pain in ass to install

Personally, I dont do it.  You still have a clutch cable on left and a brake line on the right, I typically just neatly zip tie the wiring to them and it looks neat.

it took me 15 minutes to run my wires inside the bars.  spray silicone and electrical tape if you need it.  these were bars with about a 5 inch rise.
