Flat Seat ?
« on: October 09, 2017, 04:07:31 AM »
Where are you guys getting your flat caterpillar cafe style seats from ?  Looking to install one on my 75' CB750 K5.  Are you just taking in the pan to an upholster and having to do it ?

Make it yourself out of marine grade high density foam, glue it to the pan, and have it upholstered locally, for around $100.

I have an upswept one from Dime City.  They have a flat one as well.  Both were around $200.  Just check your measurements with the hoop installed.  These fit their hoop perfectly but I'm sure other flat hoops will fit as well.

Being short and vertically challenged, I'm looking to lower my K5 to help with foot placement. My rear shocks are 12.5" in length and I ran the fork tubes up 3/4". How much more did your seat drop your bike compared to stock seat if you had one ?

I took my stock ripped up seat to an upholstery guy here. I think it cost me under $200 Canadian, was custom done according to my wishes, and retained the stock seat pan/hinges/lock. I've had it about 4-5 years now, holding up great.

Did you have the seat made thinner ?

I'm only 5'6" and the bike sits now at the seat at about 31'-32" and I can put both feet down almost flat at a stop.  Only bad part is the foam is only a little more than an inch thick and the seat isn't very comfortable.  I'm actually redoing the seat now.

Appreciate you answering my question.  I'm shorter 5'4" , so a thinner seat is definitely needed for me. What length and type of rear shocks are you using and how much did you run the fork tubes up the triple clamps ?  I'm thinking of taking a spare CB 750 seat into my upholster and see what he can do. Maybe there is a higher density foam that be used but still allow a thin seat ?

Markreimer,  Is that 1" of foam on the pan, then the seat cover over it ?  It looks thicker from the picture you posted.  How's the comfort ?

It's 1" less than the stock thickness. I'd guess it's around 2.5" thick. Pretty comfortable, although the trade-off is that I'm closer to the foot pegs. Being a tall guy, my legs feel a bit cramped as a result. I hadn't thought of that when making the request.

A friend of mine had his K6 seat done at the same time and had it made with stock thickness. it looks pretty goofy and over-stuffed compared to mine. I think 1" off stock is the most I'd do.
