Can K0 duck tail seat fit on K1?
« on: October 09, 2017, 11:33:50 PM »
Hi guys,

I bought a K0 repo seat from DSS and plan to install on my K1. however i facing some issues now.

The seat front area seem too long and rub against the tank now. I am still using the K1 Seat lock that install on the frame.

Anyone know what i am missing here? or just the seat problem? i did email DSS about this problem but they told me this seat is design for K0 bikes only? what the?

Please check out those pictures and share your thought.

thanks
Marco

I used a nice reproduction K1 seat on my K0 until I bought a K0 repro seat from DSS. (It was the cheaper one, the foam is too hard). Both fit either bike. I considered moving the ducktail to a k2 that needs a seat but that would require the K1 latch on the k2 frame. I may do it anyway. Check your tank to be sure it's all the way forward and loosen the seat bolts to take out any slack before retightening them.

i already push the tank all the way forward but seem to have problem closing the seat. If i force and close the seat to the latch on the frame. The seat will force and push the tank move to one side. see the pictures

Also some of the DSS seats have too hard or too tall rubber bumpers that make the seat difficult to latch. I saw a note that said they send the lower rubbers with the seats now.
If your problem is just foam and vinyl, the front foam could be trimmed and the vinyl pulled tight again. If it's the pan, something else is wrong.

More like the metal pan problem.
When i check out other K0 seat online, the front pan area is shorter.

Check Yamiya750 where they desribe how the K0 seat can be used on a later bike. There is a locking device something to order.

What they mean is the early year K0 seat latch.

I am using the K1 seat latch. I think the latch is not causing the problem. But I will check again later when I am in the shop

Move the holes in the hinges or make new hinges.

I have an original ducktail on a K3 chopper and it fits great. Re-pop seats probably just not made to the exact same specs.

Remove the latch and see how it fits at the tank. I think KO and K1 LATCH ARE DIFFERENT.
You may be able to cut and re weld the hinges.

I order new hinges from yamiya already.
K0  30.0mm
K1-6 31.5mm

Not sure does it make a different, but i will give it a try.
I will remove the seat leather and cut a few mm on the front, i will try not to touch or rework on the frame.

I remove the latch, hook on the seat and just place it down on the frame. move few cm back and seem alright.

The back of your tank looks low,  is the rubber mount under the rear tank mount ?

I also have a replacement seat foam and cover that look similar in the front. I haven't gotten the cover on successfully yet, it appears short on material compared to an original one.

ic, can you post some pictures? i am still waiting for the parts to arrive before i can do anything more.

The problem now is the front metal seat pan is too long, might have to remove the seat cover and cut the metal but only worries will affect the look of the seat and bike.

Slot the bolt holes, grind the hinges on the sides that need clearance, gain a few mm here and a few mm there? trim the seat pan a cm or two while you have the vinyl off, do it evenly and no one will ever notice.

Well, I went out to take pics of my Cheap ($99) DSS K0 seat on a K0 bike, It does the same thing as yours, the tank was leaned to one side and pushed aside also. The original tank is off to the paint shop right now so this needs resolved before it gets re-assembled with new paint.  I checked and the better quality ($240?) DSS seats are still back ordered. I do have the ability to try an original sandcast seat on the same bike, I'll compare and post some pics when I get them downloaded. I'm missing my photobucket account and trying to work from google photos.

Looks like I need to take my own advice. L0L!

I loosened the hinge and latch bolts one full turn and there is now clearance for the seat to close easily and it latches. I'm thinking it may have even dented the tank just above the rubber mount. When it closed hard, I assumed the rubber mounts were high as mentioned on the DSS web site.
I'll probably make some 1/8" metal shims for the hinges and latch.

Yeah mate, it must be a poor quality repro seat base, I had a repro K0 seat on my K1 and I'm putting another on my K2. No problems. ;D
I was feeling sorry for myself because I couldn't afford new bike boots, until I met a man with no legs.

So I said, "Hey mate, you haven't got any bike boots you don't need, do you?"

I also remember a K2 bike that had been wearing an aftermarket seat with no frame rubbers, with two up, that easily puts 300 plus pounds of load on those little frame side hinges. When I put a NOS seat on it I had to bend the frame tabs back up to make it work. That's another possibility Marco.

i bought the $240 seat, that is the problem..

here is the link:

Better get the seat problem solve before you install the tank with the new paint job.
