Good news, my submission to Outlier's Guild Moto Show in late March was accepted! Its not in the main hall next to invited builders by any means but heck I display my build for a free ticket into the show.

The "Featured" invited builders are loading in their bikes on Friday morning.  Most of these will be trailered in.  Shinya and Kiyo are the exception to the rule -- they usually ride their show bikes in and ride them out (when the show ends).

By contrast, most of the bikes being shown on Saturday will likely be ridden in, and then cleaned up for the show.  I would probably do this.  There is limited vehicle parking around the neighborhood of The Container Yard.  You can bring a nice cleaning kit of products in a backpack.

The 3rd Outlier's Guild Motorcycle Show was this weekend and I rode by cb750 to the show with some riding buddies. I missed last year and nice to see how it has expanded. The featured builds were phenomenal. Especially this Knuckle Head street bike by Maxwell Hazan. Got my bike displayed across from Jay LaRossa's 900ss build (Jay's bike got more attention of course and casted a huge shadow over mine, oh well). Nice to meet some people I've been corresponding with via email/internet... including our very own Don. And looking forward this coming three day weekend pounding the sheet metal with Cristian Sosa.  By the way, the bike died on me heading down the 101 on the way back, fortunately the wife was on rescue with the truck and got me out from under that sketchy freeway overpass (so I guess the bike is not completed as I thought).

btw. Don was that Shinya behind you in that pic?

thanks, now if only I can get her to run consistently. I thought the gremlins were gone after 130 miles, but the 40 mile trip to downtown LA did something.

Great meeting you at the OG Show!  It's always great putting a face with a name.  SOHC4 Members Bryan Kokkeler (BLACBikes) and ChrisBywater were also there.

To put it in perspective, Jay was an invited builder for the Golden Bolt show with that bike, and he put some $ into the Beringer gear on it.  In comparison, you have yourself a LEGIT show bike that got placed right next to a $50K custom.  Jay liked it and wanted it to have a good spot with lots of foot traffic.  You were in good company!!

Thanks for the kind words and encouragements, good perspective Don. What Cristian Sosa got going on is pretty impressive, from what I heard, Dustin Kott also took his course and the bike that Kott displayed had fairings done from what Sosa taught him. How else better to grow as a builder than influencing and teaching other builders. And what a nice guy too.

Max Hazan of Hazan Motorworks in Los Angeles
It is based on a 1974-style Knucklehead built new by S&S.  Except for the wheels, brakes, suspension, tires, carburetors and bolts, Max made nearly everything else by scratch (frame, swingarm, full fairing, hand/foot controls, exhaust). 

The customer is Chinese. Max has built several bikes for Robert B. "Bobby" Haas (Haas CNC, Haas Museum) and other well-heeled clients.  Some of his bikes are functional art.  This one is definitely more functional.  Max can ride the piss out of just about any type of bike, too.  He's a proficient rider at the track.  Check out his instagram account @maxwellhazan

His current build in progress is a stretched out land speed bike powered by a Motus V4 with a blower.

If you are I like it,  but I think frame could run closer to engine under the cases.
 Indian front end, he may have built it  as a copy, the rockers look like shopmade.
I like the tank and fenders more than his other stuff..

well I left by bike alone for a few weeks, and she started up fine again after having died on the freeway on me on the ride back home from the show. I beginning to think that the source of the problem was that the fuel line may not be able to keep up with the demand from the carbs, especially if I didn't let the bike warm up long enough from a cold start after having opened up the petcock.  I was running stock petcock from the tank to the CR31 Keihin carbs. the way I had it was that I plugged one of the two ports coming from the petcock (which is 1/4") and running it to the middle inlet on the CR31s (which has 5/16" nipple) with an adapter to transition the fuel line. the inlet between carb 1/2 and 3/4 were capped and the line feeds into the inlet between carb 2/3. my thought is that carbs 1 and 4 are the last to get fuel after it fills up 2 and 3.

i'm trying to now use both nipples from the petcock and running two lines to the carbs and attaching them between 1/2 and 3/4 and capping the inlet nipple between 2/3.

I'm curious if any of you guys have this set up on the cb750, how you route the fuel line (pictures would be of immense help). I find that the entire line never fully fills with fuel, it settles to the level of the float bowl. I assume that it draws fuels as needed when throttle is opened with engine running. but i'm trying to avoid having the fuel line curve down below the level of the carbs and travel directly down to the carbs with gravity assisting. but there isn't too much room to do this. not sure if i'm over thinking this.

i'm in the process of fine tuning the carbs. From the idle to 1/4 throttle. I've currently have #65 slow get (stock with CR 31 carbs built by Dime City), they put in YY9 needles (stock for CR31s is YY8). The initial tuning I did was to lower the clip from 4th to 5th position to fix a throttle lag at 1/2 throttle turn. I tried YY8's (smaller diameter needles) and raising the clip position (to lean it out), but the bike overall ran worse... so I kept with the YY9 needles. it seems to be running rich at 1/2 to full throttle as noted by dark smoke coming from the exhaust. What's stated in Keihin manual is that all the YY needles have the same taper and Y needles are shorter. I figure that the only way I can lean her out at 3/4 to WOT is the widen the main air jet or lower the main jet. switching from YY to Y needles I think would be opening a whole can of worms that would confusing things even more. hopefully I can get her in the ball park and proceed with the spark plug chopping. input from anyone with experience with Keihin CR specials would be greatly appreciated.

Well looks like the engines going to come out of the frame once again. I decided to run some basic diagnostic test on the bike before really digging into the carburetors to get it fine tune. I decided to check the timing which appears decent. When starting the bike from cold, she seems to have a little more trouble than before. Once she warmed up I checked the temperature of the headers with a infrared heat gun and cylinder number 4 always seems to be about a hundred degrees below the other three. So I ran a compression test. From left to right, the values were 135, 130, 130, 90. I dropped a little oil into the top of cylinder 4 re-check the compression it was shot up to 125. I do recall some issues with the 4th piston ring during initial installation, where it got caught between the cylinder and case. It may have compromised it and the symptoms appeared after some riding. Well at least this will give me the opportunity to install a frame kit with the engine out.

About fuel to carbs. My old Mikuni VM have also only one fuel T-pipe, 8mm. I fed it with one fuel line only from my tank with old style petcock with one pipe blocked by a short fuel hose and an M6 bolt in it.
When carbs were used in the 80's, easier with the K6 tank and petcock with only one fuel pipe.

My CB750 stock carbs and Mikuni TMR32 have both 2 fuel inlets. The latter also 8mm hose with adapters from the petcock's 6mm.

The guys in the race section might know about modifying these CR31.

Im thinking that since I have to take apart the top end, I might just send it off the head to have the valve guides rechecked. I bought the valve guides off of ebay, not knowing any better at the beginning when I first got into this, they stated they were Kibblewhites and had a local machine shop put them in, in addition to putting new valves and cutting the seats. What do you think about a port job while I'm at it? According to Satanic Mechanic's website, he says no point in putting CR31's in of you're not doing a port job. Any recommendations where I can send them to? I read in passing of a name or two on this site but can't seem to track them links down.

CR31s are a waste without a high-compression piston kit, porting and a performance cam.  CR29s work REALLY well with a Wiseco 836cc kit, CX-7 cam and JMR (Mike Rieck) Stage 4 port job.  If you are including all of those ingredients or a larger big bore kit with port work and a cam, then consider CR31s.

His work is not cheap.  It is pretty much THE BEST and worth every penny if you are building a performance CB engine.
