New Member and New Rider
« on: October 24, 2017, 11:06:35 AM »
Greetings from Richmond, VA!

Completed my MSF course over the summer and just purchased my first motorcycle, a 1975 CB550F. I have some work ahead of me to get her on the road, but she's in nice shape and the previous owner has been a wealth of information and well organized parts! Excited to start work on this bike and learn a thing or two from the wealth of experience on this site.

Welcome! It has been said that a vintage moto may not be the best choice for a beginner - I SAY BOLLOCKS! ;D

Welcome to the madness. Properly maintained that beast can last almost forever.

Appreciate the kind words! I’ll be sure to start a thread on the project and progress. I’d also heard that a retro bike may not be the best choice for a beginner, as you spend more time wrenching than riding; but honestly, after looking at SV650s and Ninjas and FZ07s, this bike had way more soul and I just felt better about it. Time will tell I suppose, but at least I won’t be at a loss for support!

there is nothing soulful about not getting to ride a motorcycle because it broke
If it works good, it looks good...

Noted. I'll likely write off any breakdowns and left stranded moments as "character building" events, in that case.  ;)

AMA membership for $50 will get your bike towed AND your cars too.
As of today 3/13/2012 my original owner 75 CB750F has made it through 3 wives, er EX-wives. Free at last.  ;-)

Thanks for the tip, Jerry! I think I also get a discount with my insurance if I am an AMA member. I'll check it out.

...and you get an insurance discount with your MSF certificate. Plus, purchase discounts at some vendors.

Bikes don't define our soul; we putter soul into them regardless of brand, style or age. Ride what interests you, ride regularly, and ride with care. But never care about what anyone thinks of you or your ride. That's my philosophy on motorcycles. Feel free to disregard at your convenience.

As for a discount on a tow, use my cell #. I don't charge my friends.  8)

The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S.
