75ish CB750 popping out of gear
« on: November 02, 2017, 07:43:26 AM »
My buddy has a 75 CB750 that will pop out of 2nd gear regularly.   What do you guys think would be the most likely culprit?
Yep, I'm the kid that figured out how to put things back together...eventually.

Think you know the answer to that cowboy but my money is on rounded shift dogs where the gears come together. Will need to split the case to fix that.

As long as he is using motorcycle specific "wet clutch" motor oil, then my money is on worn dogs on the #2 gear. Split the case and replace the gear, or better yet, have all the transmission gears undercut. If they are too worn then one or more gears may need replaced, but I highly recommend undercut gears if you split the cases.

Worn or bent shift fork may cause a similar issue. Also requires splitting the cases. Shifting technique can minimize the problem, you just have to isolate the "zone" where RPM and engine load "sweet spot" have a less tendency to slip out of gear. There are also some mods that can be made to the shift linkage that some have reported to minimize the issue as well. I've read up on the linkage mods, and plan to try it eventually, but I can't remember where I found that particular information.

yep, that's what I was afraid of.  In all the 750's I've had, I've never had a tranny issue of any kind.

I've had one, a K3 that would very gently just go out of second into a real or false neutral. No grinding, clunking or any other bad things. Could still ride it if I went from first to third but what fun is that. I replaced the engine with an 836 I had around and was going to delve in and repair it someday. Sounds like maybe a good winter project  ;)

Typical CB750, 2:nd can pop out, 4:th too. My K6 could do that sometime if I had not shifted gear properly. Dogs were fine and replaced by another trans with undercutted gears, 2, 3,4.

I noticed that a 10W- 40 mineral oil is bad for my gear box. 10/20W-50 make smoother shifting of gears. Synth even better... Red Line has plenty of ZDDP which might explain why that make even smoother shifting.

Open cover for the shifting mechanism, it might be something to tighten/adjust. Next is open cases and fix the transmission. Open under cover will not cost much in gaskets/seals. Good used complete trans do not cost much either.
