New CB550F owner from reading uk
« on: October 26, 2017, 09:28:41 AM »
Hi all,

This will be my first attempt at getting an old bike up and running, I've done a lot of riding in the past but generally on new bikes so fancied trying my hand at a restore job.

Just picked up a 79 CB550F 36k miles she's been sitting for around 7-8 years (possibly more) she's in a relatively good condition but needs a fair amount of work before road worthy.

After it sitting in my garage for a month while I was on holiday I decided today to go out pop a new battery in and try to get her started. After screwing up a couple of attempts I realised there wasn't enough fuel in the tank (yeah I know) so had to have the petcock on reserve, then it kicked first time. At the moment it doesn't run particularly well, doesn't rev very well and can't idle. So probably going to start by looking at the carbs give them a good clean, then oil change and new air filter.

I'll probably upload some pics / video soon if anyone is interested.

Welcome from the other side of the pond.

Carbs can be a challenge.  My 550F sat for over 20 years.  Your bike sounds like it is much closer to running condition than mine was 3 years ago.

Welcome from Texas.  You are ahead of the game if it fired up!

Yes, clean those carbs and reuse the original brass...
