Sometimes the obvious is the best
« on: October 21, 2017, 02:54:59 PM »
So I've been playing around with softening carb boots.  They're always a pain to install due to them being about as hard as steel.
"Go buy new ones..."  Sure, assuming you can find them for a model bike that's basically been out of production for an eternity.

Wintergreen oil.  it works actually, but it takes a while and the effect doesn't last forever and it costs a bit to do.

So I tried the obvious solution - boiled them.  3 minutes on the stove, they come out as floppy as an inner tube, install no problem, don't swell.  The only downside is having to clean a pot of all the petrochemicals that permeate a carburetor boot.  No big deal - that's what Dawn is for.

Sometimes you just have to try obvious solutions first before making a mess.

Heat gun basically does the same thing as far as making them soft and workable and no messy pans or mad wives  ;)

Yeah but you have to watch out for setting random things on fire, melting things, plus boiling water stays hot longer so you can carry the pan over to the bike and install the boot before it has time to cool down.
