1981 CB750 Custom - Attempting Cafe Build
« on: October 29, 2017, 08:02:58 AM »
Hey people! No experience working on motorcycles but I am attempting a cafe build.. I'm going to start with modifying the frame for the seat and shocks but chopping the shock mounts off and redoing that is something I definitely need more information on.. videos or pictures of it being done would be amazing!

Also I know nothing of the correct names for things or any cafe/motorcycle slang so please any help would be greatly appreciated!!

First off, your bike is a Dual Overhead Cam bike and this forum is mostly focused on Single Overhead Cam bikes. Plenty of folks here have both, and there’s commonality for some aspects. But the lion share of projects here are 1969-1978 Honda’s with a few early 80s 650s thrown in.

As for chopping your frame, the most significant consideration is the resulting clearance between th frame hoop, seat pan, and tire when the suspension is compressed. So don’t go nuts! Many of the bikes you see online are NOT good examples of well-built custom bikes. In fact, many perform worse than stock and are solely “aesthetic style” bikes.

And chipping your frame and welding on new tubing and shock mounts is best left to someone competent  ;)

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S.
