1975 CB550F0 Rear Light Change to LCD
« on: October 28, 2017, 06:14:03 PM »
I have a 1975 Honda CB550F with 21K miles.  I am trying to install a LCD light in my rear brake light and I am embarrassed to say I cannot get the light cover off.  I have removed the 4 screws that hold it on and it as far as I can tell it should come right off.  The only thing I can think of is it wedged in somehow.  I went so far as to start tapping with a rubber mallet on the side and cracked the lens a little.  I stopped at that point and decided to ask for help.  I really don't want to have to replace the cover so can anybody offer some help as to how to get the cover off before I end up breaking it.    In the pic you will see the 3 bolts removed and one partially installed which has since been removed.

there may be a gasket that is stuck in there and sort of glued in after sitting for years.

It has a gasket.

But LCD?  Doesn’t seem right to me.

yes it has a rubber gasket that may have turned to glue. maybe try prying around the edge with a small flathead screwdriver to loosen it up.
what's the plan with LCD? i'm with the bovine, haven't heard of one that suits this tail light.

I got it off.  It would appear that someone had actually glued it on with rubber contact cement, go figure.  I used a Sylvania super bright LED 1157R and it fit no problem and works great.  The only downside like others have mentioned in the license plate is now Red vs white.

I'm sure he might L-E-D  ;)

A programmable image Lcd tail light would be kind of neat.  Push a button and the finger shows on the display  ;D
