Carburator pulling
« on: January 04, 2018, 07:20:55 PM »
One more time for the cheap seats!

On the 550, it's easier to pull the carbs if you remove the airbox boots first - right????

I seem to recall trying that once and had a heck of a time getting them back in later.  Now having suffered through the Nighthawk airbox boots, maybe it won't seem nearly as bad - if I recall my airbox boots are pretty pliable.

So one for the cheap seats - pull the airbox boots and it should be relatively simple to remove the carbs - right?

Alright - I can give it a go.

Since I've sidelined the Nighthawk for now, I decided to take this time to rebuild the carbs on the 550 - ultrasonic them, adjust them, rebalance them, and see if I can't get those darn fuel valves to seal.  Plus tap the bowl screws on carb 4 since I stripped one of the bowl screws.

Forgot to ask - are those airbox boots on 4into1 good quality?

My #3 airbox boot is torn at the carburetor - doubt it sealing well.  Might as well pick up a new set while I'm doing this.

Edit:
Nevermind - 4into1 doesn't sell air box boots that will fit a 77 550k.  Guess I'll just repair them then. :'(

Yes on the airboots for both on/off of the 550 carb rack. Be sure to inspect the boots too though because over time the rubber wears and some opening may develop and you may need to patch the boots with some good bond. I found this material to work quite well

You can chase the mend with some Permatex Ultra Black gasket maker 82180.
Good luck!
Strynboen on the forums has mentioned heating up the boots first before removal/installation with a blow dryer to make them softer which is a good idea too.

the airbox boots should be soft and pliable, they are on the cold side, the manifold rubbers/boots are subject to extreme heat and are made from very heavy duty rubber/concrete?they can be boiled or heated to make installation easier, ive always boiled them then act quickly.
