CB650 ignition upgrades
« on: November 03, 2017, 07:09:33 PM »
I’ve been doing some research on the hesitation I have during acceleration on my 1980 cb650c. I’ve ruled out fuel, carbs professionally cleaned and rebuilt. It runs decent when warm but still some hesitation. From research I’ve decided to look into ignition upgrades. Looking at running HEI modules and coils. Does anyone have any detailed pictures or wiring diagrams for this project? Or even better would be a plug and play ignition upgrade that doesn’t break the bank. Any suggestions or ideas are appreciated!

I'm using a C5 ignition and it's plug and play. Super easy to install and setup, but it is expensive, though it comes with new coils too so it's not a bad deal.

In my build thread I also started adapting a PAMCO for a 750 to a 650. All you really need to change is the plate diameter. I gave up and just went with the C5 in the interest of time.

That said, I believe member "SOHC4 Cafe Racer Fan" might have a full stock 650 ignition.

Is there a a noticeable performance improvement with the C5 kit?

I can't really tell the difference between the C5 and how points acted on my 550. I think a member did a dyno test and showed increased hp but it was only 1 or 2 at most. Maybe others with C5s can chime in?

Yeah the CB650 doesn’t have points but many people report that the stock ignition system is weak which causes similar symptoms to what I’m experiencing. I may give the HEI coils and modules a try and see if that helps at all.
