I turned the kickstarter and all this came out.

This looks like the starter ratchet and the plate guide mainly. I guess I'll have to take the bottom of the engine off and try to fix it. It's a heartbreaker and I won't be able to do anything about it for several months most likely.

"Of all tyrannies, a tyranny sincerely exercised for the good of it's victim may be the most oppressive. It may be better to live under robber barons than under omnipotent moral busybodies. The robber baron's cruelty may sometimes sleep, his cupidity may at some point be satiated, but those who torment us for our own good will torment us without end for they do so with the approval of their own conscience." - C.S. Lewis

I think the circlip is sprung..that is to say some forced too far apart, inducing failure at a later date..

Yeah, you'll want that back together. :)

That happened on a buddy's CB550 once. We were in a hurry to get it back together after a total rebuild prior to a road trip, so we pulled the oil pan and reassembled the kickstarter from underneath. He rode it out of the shop later that day on a 2300 mile trip! It held up fine for the last three years and he only kick started it since the battery was too small for the starter.

I'm not sure why it sprung apart, but it might have been a circlip issue like 754 said. I also seem to remember thinking he initially assembled it wrong since I remember there being a "bad" way and a "good" way to assemble it when I put it back together for him. Someone else might chime in with better instructions on reassembling it the correct way.

Good luck!

Yeah if anyone has information regarding the correct way to assemble one that would be cool. I have to assemble mine, now I'm debating on replacing the circlips.  ::)

No debate about it IMO. I always replace all circlips whether they be on engine or cycle parts.

Remember there's a right and a wrong way to fit them too - 'sharp' edge uppermost in most cases, ie opposite thrust components. :)

For posterity, you guys were correct. The small circlip was over expanded. I was able to reassemble the spindle without splitting the cases. I did remove my engine, but you might be able to get away without doing that even.
