CB750K vs CB750A Points plate and advance unit
« on: November 04, 2017, 04:02:31 AM »
Hi All,
Is there a difference in the advance mechanism or points plate between a 1973 CB750K and a 1976 CB750A model? I noticed that the CB750K had a 300 on the points plate, and the CB750A has 333 on it. Are they interchangeable? I helped my friend Pat install a CB750A points and advance plate into a 1973 CB750K, to replace a burnt up Dyna ignition. Haven't had the chance to fire it up yet, but static timed the points late yesterday, and will fire it up today. We kept the green 3 ohm Dyna coils, as they should work fine with the points.

The "333" points plate is for a CB350F, although dimensionally it is probably the same as the 750 plates.
The 750A should use the same points plate as the regular 750/550's.
Consensus seems to be that the points plates are the same and Honda had different part numbers for inventory purposes.

The advance mechanism for the 750A may be marked 333.

I would expect the advance assembly for the 750A to be unique due to the automatic transmission regardless of the markings.
Honda changed the profile of the advancer cams over the years on the 750K's without changing the part numbers.
Hondaman has a whole write-up about this somewhere here on the forums.

Thanks, CycleRanger,
The advance mechanism is marked 333, and from what I have learned here and the SOHC forum in the UK, I am going to see how it runs. It should be ok, as the CB750A had a slightly later advance, and that's ok too. They look identical, but I believe the springs are stiffer on the 333 advance plate.
