24 Hours of Lemons
« on: November 07, 2017, 08:21:09 AM »
Anyone here race in this? I've know about this for a few years but kind of rediscovered it. Found a Hyundai Accent on Craigslist for $200. Really considering doing this with a handful of friends. But I know other than the $500 limit on the price of the car, the rest gets expensive.

I've been reading about it in Car and Driver for years. It always sounds like fun, but it seems like it has grown in scope a bit and if you actually want to win, like all racing, the $$ can be big.

Yeah a guy on HAMB does it every year. Last year he did it in an Edsel and this year he did it in a corvair. I wish I lived out that way I’d definitely do it. This year there was another guy in a 70s Citroen. Very cool race. Would be cool to do it but with motorcycles too.

I love the lemons race!  So much jalopy carnage 😂

Frank could probably win it with a freshly built cb750 powered diahastu

Nice, yeah it's a cool race. I've been watching YouTube videos like crazy. And yeah, Bankerdanny, from old videos I've seen it seems to have grown a lot. But apparently there isn't much money to collect if you win. I believe the grand prize is $400 in nickels...so more of a recognition thing I guess.

So many people bring spare motors and trailers fully stocked with tools and parts with welders and other fabricating equipment. I want to go, but I can't do any of that stuff. Even adding a roll cage gets expensive.

Totally, with bikes it would be awesome! Slightly more dangerous perhaps.

Not sure what model. There was an article about the race in Hagerty’s publication.

It just seems like more fun than anything. You should see what this dude did to the Corvair. He had a reel to reel setup in the back seat with a solar panel on the front to power it.

My dad owned own of those, a DS19. It had the double headlights with the high beam turning into corners. It was no lemon, never had anything go wrong with it.

But it’s not about speed... I’m confused. Are the different locations different types of races? The one out west is a rally and doesn’t require anyone to win the distance race. It’s more about if you finish at all.

Anyway, it seems like a team sport as well. I’d be down to make a team.

From the little research I've done on the actual race types, I know of two. One where it's a rally and I think it starts in one city and goes to another. I think the goal is not necessarily speed but maybe more of a completion thing. The second where it's about how many laps you can do, but since there's a set amount of time then it becomes about speed and reliability. I think the main race is the second one.

If we do actually do this, I'll hit you up, haha. If you make another team, I'll see you in my rear view mirror (as I'm spun around on the track during lap 1).

Anyone know of these kinds of races in the northeast? I'm in CT and driving down to Texas isn't the most fun idea.
